Do you have a loved one, locked away from being the person you know they were meant to be? I know what that’s like. My daughter’s prison: demon possession.
It was if the daughter I had always loved, always cuddled, always cherished, the child of smiles and sunshine had been stolen away from me and locked away somewhere beyond my reach.
And in her place was this vacant-eyed stranger, with wild hair and demonic laugh. How could I get my daughter back? It seemed so hopeless, so heartbreaking. And then, I heard about Jesus.
Jesus would get my daughter back for me. Jesus would open the lock. Jesus was the key. But how could I reach Jesus?
And then I heard some amazing news. Jesus had come to our area. I run to the house where he is at and pound at the door.
“Jesus Son of David, please have mercy on me. My poor daughter is demon possessed and she is suffering so much. Please help her.”
My cries are met with stony silence. There is no answer from within the house. I am not giving up. The key to the lock holding my daughter prisoner is behind that door and I won’t give up until I get it.
I pound harder and harder until my fists begin to bleed. I can hear voices telling Jesus to send me away. But Jesus opens the door!
He tells me “I was sent for the lost sheep of Israel.” But there is such love and kindness in his voice despite his refusal. I fall at his feet.
“Lord, please, help me.” (WOMAN’S VOICE IS CHOKING WITH TEARS) He tells me that it is not right to give the children’s bread to the dogs. I’m used to the Jews calling my people dogs, but Jesus uses a different word, one that you might use for the pets around the table.
Is Jesus giving me a hint? An idea comes to me, the words that I should use. I take a deep breath and say, “Yes, but even the dogs eat the crumbs that come from their master’s table.” (Matt 15:27 NIV)
Jesus helps me to my feet and smiles. “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” (Matt 15:28 NIV)
Granted? Overwhelmed with gratitude, I thank him and run to my house. Will I be greeted by that vacant-eyed stranger? I sob in gratitude as I hug my girl of smiles and sunshine, freed from her demonic prison.
Do you have a loved one, locked away from being the person you know they could be? Fall at the feet of Jesus, have faith, He is the key.
