I nodded almost imperceptibly.
“Well it’s always nice to see you.” She smiled and I swear I could hear my heart pounding harder and faster. I was worried for a second she’d hear it too.
While she waited on the person in front of me, I took in her appearance, yet again. Actually I’d pretty much memorized her looks, from the smattering of freckles across her straight nose, her big brown eyes, and her dark-chocolate wavy hair (which was in a net, so I had no idea if it was long or not), to her always-smiling mouth and her approachable friendly manner.
No doubt about it, I was smitten. I knew her name only because it was on her tag – Emma. Emma, what a melodious name. I had even looked up its meaning, “God has answered”. Who knew? Maybe she was the answer to my prayer!
She finished serving the other customer before turning back to me. “Having the usual?” she lightly asked.
I nodded again.
“You don’t talk much do you?”
Come on, Mitch, it’s now or never.
While she prepped my order I cleared my throat. “Em-Emma,” I stammered.
She looked up, one hand still holding the condiments. “Yes?”
“Um, Emma, would you like to have coffee with me sometime?”
For a second she frowned, and I was really worried I’d blown it. Then she looked directly at me and beamed. “Mitch? It’s Mitch right? I see you on campus every day on my way to class. Sure. I’d like to have coffee with you. When?”
I had steeled myself for a refusal so at first I couldn’t take in her answer and was about to turn heel before the words filtered through my numb brain. “Wait. What? You’ll go for coffee?”
“Of course I will. Now, do you want Italian or Ranch on this hero?”
As she rang my hero sandwich up we firmed up a day and time for the coffee date. As she handed the sandwich to me, I turned back to her and said, “I have a confession to make. I don’t even like heroes. I only buy them so I can see you.”
She laughed once more. “I figured. I’ve seen you give your sandwiches to the homeless guy on the corner more than once. I wondered why.” Her eyes gleamed. ‘It wasn’t just an excuse to see me, was it?”
Again I nodded. Emma grinned and her brown eyes lit up. “I think getting to know you will be fun. I look forward to our coffee date.”
As I left the sandwich shop I saw the homeless guy, named Mike, waiting just outside. I offered him the huge hero sandwich, which he gladly took. Looking back at the store I caught one final glimpse of Emma as she smiled at us both.
Heroes might not be my food of choice, but I had a feeling they had just played a big part in my present and future.
