Once launched in the river, I paddled against the current to reach the tropical grotto. Lush greenery and intoxicating aromas of vibrantly colored flowers lining the hillsides flooded my senses, distracting me from noticing that storm clouds had blanketed the sky.
KABOOM! Thunder sounded, echoing off the surrounding mountains. Zigzags of lightning lit up the darkened sky, and the water became choppy. Paddling my kayak back towards the docks, I struggled to keep from capsizing into the roiling water. No one else was around, and I was at a bend of the river, so remained unseen by others.
All of a sudden, a seasoned man swung down from a rope attached to a nearby tree crash-landed across my double-seated kayak. Sheepishly, he looked up at me with a lopsided grin. Be still my heart! After assisting him into the other seat, I smoothed down my hair before studying the hunk beside me. I’m sure my mouth dropped open when I realized who was sitting inches away. I’d know him anywhere -- those khakis, the partially buttoned shirt, the hat. It was Indiana Jones!
Too distracted with gawking at the hero of my dreams, I failed to mind the weather, and now rain bombarded us, causing the river to agitate like a washing machine. Despite the rocking kayak, Indie stood upright, swung his ever-present whip, lassoing a hillside banyan tree, and maneuvered the watercraft to safety. Once securely tethered to the tree, the handsome man held me in his embrace —for protection, he said. We looked into one another’s eyes. He glanced down at my lips, then his head lowered to my face.
SPLASH. Suddenly, we were in the water — the capsized kayak bouncing away from my grasp. My glasses had flown off, and I was unable to see where I was going. The river was not deep, but strong waves kept knocking me down, and I tumbled along with the current. Struggling to keep my head above water, I cried out: “Indie, help!” Just as I was about to go underwater, I felt his arm wrap around my waist. He half-carried me the few feet to the kayak-landing carved into the riverbank.
As we sat in the mud, panting for breath, the storm ceased as quickly as it began. The clouds cleared, and the setting sun colored the sky in hues of pink and orange. Miraculously, the overturned kayak floated into sight, towing Indiana Jones’s trusty whip, and dragging the yellow oar. The adventurer uprighted the vessel, and there was his hat containing my eyeglasses! He gently replaced the glasses on my face and donned his soggy hat.
Enjoying the sunset as we paddled back to the kayak rental shop, he regaled me with stories of his adventures. As the last rays of light left the sky, he escorted me to the car. Unlocking the door, I turned to say goodbye. “Oh Indie, thank you for saving my life!”
His face tilting down to mine, he kissed me as I’ve never before been kissed. Pulling away, he tipped his trademark hat, grinned, and drawled: "My pleasure, ma’am." Leaping down the soggy riverbank, he disappeared into a grove of banana trees. Sighing, I whispered: “Indiana Jones, my hero!”
Heading back to the hotel, I wondered what I should tell my friends — there was no way they would believe my story. But as for me, I shall never forget my handsome rescuer and his romantic goodbye kiss in the twilight of a tropical island.
