I was born hungry
You were born hungry
Our mother or another
Fed us at the breast or
From a bottle
Till we were satisfied
So we slept
Until we became
Hungry again
The evidence of
Satisfaction is
Slumber

Death never slumbers
It’s never satisfied
Death stalks
Creation
For it’s next meal
It’s next victim
It’s next payment
For all born are
Born in sin
Death is the
Price of sin
Death is
Forever hungry

But not all born
Carry life
They bear
Soul-deep starvation
Marrow burning
Barrenness
Echoing guttural moans
Like an ill wind
That finds no shore
The empty womb
Unsatisfied

Like the Earth
Under a scorching sun
Longing for water
Desperate for life
When the rains
Finally come
Earth sucks it up
Trees flowers
Plants rivers
Guzzle all and cry
For more
Earth pants
Unquenched

So it is with fire
Searching reaching
Grabbing fuel
Exploding sparks
Spreading swallowing
All in it’s path
Fire’s desires
Run deep
It never sleeps
Always moves
It creeps
Seeking fuel
Constantly
Fire burns
Unappeased

The eye of man is like
Earth
Fire and
The barren womb
Always craving
The next new thing
Curiosity or horror
Voracious eyes
Shifting seeking desiring
Something fresh
But find no rest
Eyes of man
Ravenous

But what if we
Exchange our craving
Set our heart’s desire
Instead on God
What if we
Barren
Sin-filled
Lusty Adams
Became starved
For God and never
Let the slumber
Of satisfaction
Kill the ache

What if we finally
Recognize
Death is constantly
Stalking us
What if we ran after God
Panting for the water
Of His word
Feeling His life
Finding contentment
But rejecting
Satisfaction
Refusing slumber

What if we stayed
Hungry
Just
For
Him
