Our third child joined our family when she was just under a year old. I knew immediately that she needed a nutritional boost to gain strength in her legs and be able to stand up and take steps. She had a voracious appetite, and would clean every morsel from her plate. If a few crumbs fell onto her high chair tray, she meticulously picked them up and devoured them.

Friends commented on her good appetite and were careful not to leave snack plates in her reach. If she saw a bit of food, it was in her mouth. While some folks thought her antics with food was cute, I knew that her behavior was most likely from having been hungry at some point in her life. Hence, get it while you can.

After several months she learned that food was always readily available and she did not need to eat every morsel or hoard it. I was pleased to see her gain physical strength and begin walking. When I think of this period of time in the life of our daughter I am reminded that while physical hunger is a sad thing, spiritual hunger is even more devastating.

In recent years my husband and I have been involved in Bible Translation. We have seen and talked to people who are hungering for God’s Word. We have seen some get a copy of a New Testament in their own language for the first time. Most grasped it to their hearts, then sat down in the shade of a tree and began devouring it. I observed that when people get even little snippets of Scripture they grasp every morsel and want more. I have also witnessed the results of people nourished on God’s Word. Their lives glowed with renewed vitality as they began living as Jesus taught.

Jesus said, “I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger...”. And the Psalmist declares, “...thy word hath quickened me.” Just as I made sure my child had plenty to eat physically, I must also try my best to be sure she and others have the Bread of Life which will benefit for eternity. If I do not feed the spiritually hungry I am as negligent as if I ignored the physical hunger of my child.

Father, please help me be as concerned for those that are spiritually hungry as I am for my children that are physically hungry.
