In Death


Even with its balloons and brightly painted walls, there was no disguising what it was: a hospital room for children. The IV bags and monitors were the first clue, the second was the child sitting on the hospital bed playing with dolls and half-watching the Disney channel on an iPad. The third clue was her parents, hovering over her bed, casting worried looks at the monitor.

“It will be here soon, I promise,” Dr Kim South reassured her young patient, although she knew her words were more for the parents. “I know you’ve waited a long time for this, and the day has finally arrived.”
Sara looked up at Dr South, and then at her parents who could barely contain their tears. “Tell me again what happens.”

Two doors down, in the same hospital, South’s colleague, Dr Aiden Drake was having an almost identical conversation with his patient, 9-year old Terrence.

Across the city, Meredith’s ring tone alerted her to a call from the hospital. “Yes?” she answered.
“You need to come in, right now!”
“Do you mean…”
“Yes! Come. Now. We need to prep you.”
With shaking hands she hit the End Call button, and immediately called her sister. “It’s time,” she shakily laughed. “Can you drive me?”
She held the phone from her ear as Emily squealed with delight. “I’ll be right there!”

A couple of hours later, while Sara, Terrence, and Meredith were being prepped for surgery, the surgical teams lined the hallway to the ORs. The elevator doors opened, and they bowed their heads as a gurney, pushed by two orderlies, made its way past them to the last door on the right. There, another surgical team was on hand to remove a heart, a liver and a kidney.

In death there is life.

This is a lovely take on the topic. When my mom died suddenly at age 57, the only comfort was knowing that her some of her organs were going to help someone else's loved one live. Congratulations on your EC. Happy Dance!
