When something quickly took me by surprise.
I stared at what was facing me from far across the room
And walked toward them as I rubbed my eyes.
There stood two giant mirrors side by side against the wall
Unframed, it seemed they stood without support.
They could reflect the image of a person eight feet tall
Or someone who, like me, is very short.
Across one mirror's top was written in a large, bold font:
"THE WAY YOU LOOK AT YOU" was how it read.
And on the other mirror were the words that startled me:
"HOW JESUS LOOKS AT YOU" is what it said.
I looked into the mirror which showed how I see myself.
So full of sin, I nearly walked away.
I saw an image full of shame for things that I had done.
A life discordant, full of disarray.
I saw events that caused me anguish even as a child
When arguing was commonplace for me.
I still remember Daddy's face when Mother said to him
That I'd refused to do a chore assigned to me.
In high school I hung out with friends whom I'd been warned about
And I participated in their fun.
'Twas only by the grace of God that I came through unscathed.
I left the group when mischief had begun.
My mirror showed rebellion in my marriage early on
When "wives, obey your husbands" bothered me.
Our arguments were frequent and it hurts me now to know
Our children felt compelled to referee.
It seemed where'er I looked, my mirror showed my sinful self.
The pictures were arranged like a collage.
They overlapped each other and so numerous that I
Felt victim of a well-planned sabotage.
In tears, I cried, "Enough! That's all my broken heart can stand.
Forgive me, Lord, for all that I have done.
Wash me clean in Jesus' blood and rid me of my sins
Assure me that my new life has begun."
The other mirror, aptly named, "HOW JESUS LOOKS AT YOU"
Showed sins for many years that kept me chained.
With giant-sized erasers, Jesus wiped away each stain
Until no trace of any sin remained.
He didn't blame me for the things I'd done against His will.
Nor ask for reparations for my past.
He took the blame upon Himself and chose to die for me.
This kind of love is surely unsurpassed.
Each night I pray for God's forgiveness if I've failed my Lord
Or even brought dishonor to His name.
Reflecting on His goodness when my barren soul cried out,
My life since then has never been the same.
