“I am ready, Your majesty - but I must warn you. Today, you may not like my answer. I presume you’re about to ask me if you’re the fairest in the land.”
“Well, of course I am. I ask you that question every day, do I not?”
“You most certainly do. And for the last two months, I’ve been saying you are, indeed, the fairest in all the land.”
“Yes, Mirror, and it’s ever so satisfying to hear that. I am so very grateful to you.”
“I know. You’ve made your appreciation clear. You have the servants polish me twice a day, and you bought me a new frame. Last week, you even moved me to a place of honor in your chamber. If mirrors competed in a contest based on their owners’ favor, I would surely win.”
“You deserve no less. Your daily assurances please me.”
“I’m glad, my Queen. But this morning my answer is quite different, and knowing how you sometimes react to bad news, I felt obligated to warn you."
“My gracious, Mirror. What can you possibly mean?”
“Your Majesty, I have recently become aware of a beautiful young girl named Snow White, and..”
“Stop. I cannot even contemplate your next words. How could a fairer lady possibly live in my kingdom? That cannot be. You must be mistaken, Mirror.”
“I was created to tell the complete truth, Your Majesty - so I cannot be mistaken.”
“Well, this is unthinkable, Mirror! I cannot allow this!”
"I completely understand, your Majesty. I have come to learn that being the fairest is the thing you most treasure."
"Well, of course it is. I care about my appearance. Who doesn't? So, now that you have revealed this to me, I must take action. Do you recall where I left my latest poison apple recipe?"
"I'm sure I don't know, Your Majesty. And while I don't care to be a witness to any more of your nefarious plan for that dear girl, I haven't finished what I need to say."
"Well, do go on, Mirror. I apparently have apples to poison."
"Well, if I may, Your Majesty... If I were an ordinary mirror, I would merely reflect your outward appearance. But since I am a Magic Mirror, I can discern and comment not only on someone's outward appearance - but also on their inward appearance. "
" Why, whatever do you mean, Mirror?"
"You see, Your Majesty, although your physical beauty is still almost unparalleled, my sources tell me this Snow White is not only beautiful on the outside, but also in her heart and soul. Those two aspects combine to make her the fairest in the land. I am sorry to say since you are - by your own admission - an evil Queen, your inner self does not match your outward beauty."
"Watch yourself, Mirror. That statement can be counted as treason."
"Perhaps, Your Majesty. But please recall, I tell only the truth."
"Yes, that is true. So, if I want to be the fairest again, I must simply stop doing evil things?"
"Well, only partially, Your Majesty. Evil deeds are not your only problem. After all, you do evil things because of the evil inside your soul. To be deemed completely fair, you must forsake the evil inside your soul."
"And how on earth could I do that, Mirror?"
"I'm glad you asked, but the answer lies not on this earth. If I might make a suggestion, you might consider talking with the Bishop of the local church. I hear he is well-versed in assisting those who wish to change their lives for the better."
"Oh, all right, Mirror. I should at least consider it. Perhaps it might be a lark to become a good Queen. I'll go to the church - and I'll bring the good bishop some of my best apples."
"Some ... non-poisoned ones?"
"Oh, all right: non-poisoned. This is going to be a very different way of living for me, isn't it?"
"Yes, it will. And I will look forward to reflecting it."
