Michael was quietly working a jigsaw puzzle on the floor. Without any fanfare or discussion, he stood up, walked around behind her chair, and did something so dear and profound it was like a ray of sunshine had burst in on a dark and gloomy day.
He laid those tiny hands on his grandma’s head and prayed. At that time, his L-words sounded very much like W-words. No matter the stage of his pronunciation development, I’m sure that simple knock on Heaven’s door was sweet music to the Father’s ears.
“Dear Ward,” he said with true childish faith, “Pweeze heal Gwamma’s headache. Thank you. A-men.”
Then, with total assurance that God would work, he immediately grasped either side of her face to turn her in his direction, delivered a million-watt smile, and with great anticipation asked, “Is it better now?”
It was!
That memory is like a balm that washes over me when my prayers don’t seem to be answered with that same lightning speed. Talking to the Lord was as natural and spontaneous to him as breathing. He didn’t begin speaking in Olde English or plead and weep for an audience with the healer. He stopped in the middle of play, walked right into someone’s painful situation with no fanfare or self-importance, and merely laid hands on her head and spoke to God.
Adults tend to make communication with our Creator a complicated, intense, hit or miss thing. My precious baby had not lived long enough to learn all the wrong things. His guileless approach was perfection, wrapped in stunning truth, wrapped in a beautiful witness.
Those kinds of inspirational moments are priceless gifts we can open over and over and never tire of the sweet clarity of the unexpected lessons of simple faith. Like dialing a radio to the right frequency for good reception, if we keep tuned in and ready, God may just teach us a thing or two about coming to Him as a little child.
As we march onward as Christians in His Army, I like to think of those sudden wonderful reminders as our Lord’s KISS (Keep It Simple, Soldier).

Matthew 18:3-5 (NLT)
3 Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven.
4 So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.
5 “And anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf is welcoming me.
