Sharp stab in lower back
To point of nausea,
Sick with worst agony
Of my recall.
Fear, excessive fear—
When in hospital,
Tests revealed
Location of
Lodged kidney stone.
Pain still, excruciating pain—
Numbed only slightly
By medication,
With disappointment for
Failed retrieval procedure.
Wait, extended wait—
Ten days of sickness,
Confined to bed
And hoping for
Stubborn stone to pass.
Kindness, exceeding kindness—
By nurses who cared for me
And loving family,
Who prayed and visited
And comforted me.
Concern, extraordinary concern—
When doctor declared
No more time to wait,
And he would perform surgery
The very next day.
Relief, exhilarating relief—
When in wee early hours
Of the morning,
The stone passed,
“Hallelujah.”
Prayer, exhaustive prayer—
By a precious saint,
Who at prayer meeting
Had heard God’s promise
For my healing.
Joy, exuberant joy—
To receive God’s blessing
Of freedom from pain,
And to be at home
With my husband again.
