Quincy Stevens stepped away from the full-length mirror and fussed with the pleat in her plaid skirt. “If you’re talking about Bivin Bains, don’t forget he’s Canadian and I haven’t seen him step away from that porker of his all weekend.”
Sissy finished lacing up her knee-high leather boots and glanced out the second story window over-looking the horse barns. “What chance do I have with Belinda Cassidy and Jayde Simpson show-jumping right in front of his pigsty?”
Quincy stepped up beside her friend at the window. “Why don’t you take one of your blue-ribbon pies over there?”
“He probably would let it sit there all day until the flies got it.”
“Then don’t give it to him.”
“What are you trying to say?”
“Give it to the pig.”
“What? Why would I give my prize-winning pie to a pig?”
“Because you want the guy who owns the pig. That porker is almost 300 pounds. If you can show you love that thing as much as he does, he’ll notice you for sure.”
Sissy smirked, turned toward her kitchen and lifted up the first of her three pies. “I should stand by those verticals and oxers when Belinda is going over on her blue-ribbon champ and throw this pie into her face.”
Quincy giggled. “I can imagine Belinda accepting her prize with your pie dripping off her nose and chin. I’m not sure Bivin would be impressed. Did I tell you I saw him praying before he ate his burger?”
Sissy set down her pie. “What kind of prayer?”
“How am I supposed to know? The normal ‘God bless this food’, prayer.”
“Did he say anything?”
Quincy furrowed her brows as if confused. “Do you think he was praying for you?”
A flush of red raced up Sissy’s neck and cheeks. She turned away, picked up a cup and poured herself a glass from the faucet. “God probably wouldn’t hear if he did.”
Quincy stepped up and put an arm around her friend’s waist. “Why would you say that?”
Sissy hung her head, reached up toward her braids and pulled out the two blue ribbons. “Ever since my mom died, I haven’t been to church. My Bible is stuck in a drawer somewhere. I spend all my spare time looking after my dad and three little brothers.”
“You’re doing what you can. Hey, you’re making God’s creation taste great with those pies of yours. I’m sure God understands.”
Sissy picked up her pie and walked quickly out the door and down the stairs toward the horse barns. Quincy followed close behind. When she reached the blue ribbon pinned next to the stall for Belinda’s horse, she took a deep breath and looked inside. Belinda and Jayde were brushing their horses – earbuds blaring music that made them sway and nod.
Jayde was the first to notice Sissy and Quincy. She removed her earbud and stopped her brushing. “What do you want?”
Sissy lifted up her pie. “I just wondered if you want to share some pie with us.”
Jayde sauntered over while Belinda turned to watch the proceedings. Jayde pointed at her ear and Belinda removed her earbud. “Blue Ribbon Pie,” she said.
As the four girls gathered around the pie set on top of a stack of hay bales Belinda put up her hands. “We should share this with the pig-guy. He’s the loneliest guy I’ve seen. Hold on a minute and I’ll get him.”
Five minutes later, Bivin and Belinda returned. By then Sissy and Quincy had set up seats from other hay bales. Sissy cut the pie into six huge slices. She put two in front of Bivin. “One for your pig,” she said.
His smile was brighter than sunshine. “You’re giving your blue-ribbon pie to my pig?”
Sissy nodded. “Unless you’d rather eat it yourself and leave us wondering who the pig is.”
Bivin grinned. “That’s something my sister would say. Hey, maybe after we’re done here, we can all go and feed this pie to Samson. You all are such an answer to prayer.”
“Why would you say that?”
Bivin grit his teeth but finally nodded. “People don’t always know how to talk to the pig-boy and it gets lonely. Now, I know who deserves the blue ribbon.”
