“I’ll clean up my room later, Mom,
Honest I will,”
Says my “all talk, no action” son
As he runs out the front door
With his bat over his shoulder.
This he had said yesterday
Before he went bike riding.
After this hasty disappearance,
I open the door to his room
To look with despair upon
Dirty jeans and shirts,
Underwear and socks
Atop the unmade bed
And on the floor by the closet.
The toe of one scruffy tennis shoe
Peeks out from under the
Twisted bedspread
That’s drooping on the floor.
I can see under the bed
Where the spread doesn’t quite reach,
The evidence of a late-night snack,
Or perhaps three or four—
Crusts from a peanut-butter sandwich,
Cookie crumbs, and the wrapper
From an ice cream sandwich,
Along with several empty coke cans,
All In the company
Of an army of dust bunnies.
On his dresser is a stack of schoolbooks
Beside the folded clean laundry
He’d promised to put away yesterday.
I dare not venture to open
The closet or dresser drawers.
When he comes home,
I’m going to give him an ultimatum—
No friends, no play, no fun
Until this mess is cleaned up . . .
Or maybe, I’ll just turn it over
To my husband.
