pour them on pages,
and line them up in order—
Call it “My Life.”
Someday, I’ll leap off
the cliff of a snow-capped mountain,
hang glide over the marble landscape,
swirled with clouds.
I’ll cling to the wind,
soar adjacent to eagles
tasting the same icicle air.
Because I am young.
Someday, I’ll circle the globe,
skip across oceans
smelling of salty live fish,
leave footprints on every continent,
stroll the Great Wall of China,
smell tropical flowers,
the sweet Plumeria of Costa Rica,
taste croissants au beurre in Paris.
Someday, I’ll seek God,
set my heart toward heaven’s gate
and my eyes through his word,
peel off my stubborn, offended skin,
and forgive.
Untie the gift he gave and
share his golden grace.
Someday passes, and
upon my bed of final sleep,
I remember.
Hit with a lifetime of
New Year’s resolutions,
of aspirations
and spoken dreams,
swept under tomorrows.
Where is my memoir?
Why have my feet never left the ground?
I thought I could fly…
or at least hover.
My footprints have never
traveled far from home.
My golden gift, left years ago,
still wrapped with ribbon, unopened.
Words, disconnected,
my body never followed;
each syllable floated away like bubbles
drifting a short way before popping,
into a mist without shadows.
but God…
who does what he says
is only a prayer away
to defy gravity and lift me away.

But for a few of those, the eternal ability is soar lays empty because they did not choose it. But rather chased bucket lists and human achievement. Thank you for writing this! It’s deeply moving.
