While the mob bays for His blood;
The accused One stands there calmly
And responds without a word—
By blaspheming undeterred.
Pontius Pilate, quite dumfounded
By His calm and silent grace,
Knows their charges are unfounded,
Of His guilt he finds no trace—
In his judgement there’s no case.
But the priests stir up the masses
To demand that He be killed—
This court, the law bypasses—
The voice of justice silenced, stilled,
But the Word of God fulfilled.
An injustice without equal
A crime committed by the law—
Oh how marvellous the sequel!
Which the Word of God foresaw—
Bow my head in silent awe.
For the sentence on the Sinless
Is the price He paid for me;
Though my debt was vast and endless
By His death He set me free—
Died for me on Calvary.
God used man’s evil scheming
Perfect justice to attain;
He perfected man’s redeeming,
Great injustice turned to gain—
Life eternal through the Slain.
