Wary of covetous envy,
Fearful of property loss
In our castles of much and plenty.
Locks are guarding our treasure,
Our items of colour and glitter,
Our objects of great import,
Things that are brighter and bigger.
We buy much more than we need,
Amassing a spendid array
Of valuable goods and chattels
For comfort and leisure and play.
But rust creeps stealthily in,
And silent moths seek a share,
And the value keeps crumbling down,
And the glitter's in need of repair.
The thieves break in and steal,
And carry our treasure away,
Indifferent to whom it belongs,
And careless of our dismay.
In our first-world material life
Our hearts can be easily trapped
By wealth and its sticky web,
Surrounded, bamboozled and wrapped.
We forget that our focus should be
On the kingdom that never ends,
And the purposes of our King,
The One on whom all depends.
For He called us to build our treasure
Not on this temporary Earth,
But instead in our home-ever-after,
For that is the kingdom of worth.
When compassion replaces our greed
Generosity rules in our hearts.
That's when contentment sets in
And the counting of blessings then starts.
When others are loved as ourselves
As we live in the light of His way,
We let go of our self-seeking greed,
As our lives at His feet we now lay.
