Evan glanced up from the YouTube video he was watching on his tablet. “Why are you saying that?”
“This mess never seems to finish,” Megan replied. “Crème Brulee has only got five ingredients. This Martha Stewart recipe is going to be the death of me yet.”
Evan joked as he put down his tablet. “Et tu Brulee?”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Megan snapped.
Evan smiled. “I’m watching a documentary on the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC. He was the most powerful man in the world but he was betrayed by someone he trusted.”
“Are you saying that Martha Stewart is betraying me?”
“No,” Evan said, shaking his head. “I’m just saying that Caesar was betrayed by someone he trusted.”
“Brutus.”
“Yes, Brutus plus a conspiracy of 60 other senators.” Evan picked up the tablet again as Megan poured dish soap over her dishes. “You talked about a conspiracy.”
“What’s that got to do with Crème Brulee?”
“Nothing really.”
“Then what are you trying to say?”
Evan stood and walked toward the near finished dessert on the counter. “It’s just that the senators were the heavy cream of the crop and Brutus used sugary words to get Caesar to ignore the warning visions of his wife, the unfavorable omens of the priests, and the concerns of his doctors and friends. He walked into the fire and got burnt.”
“And what part are you playing in this drama?”
“I did warn you that this was a tricky recipe.”
“Didn’t Caesar start a civil war by crossing the Rubicon and chasing Pompey?”
“Yup!”
“Do you think you might be crossing a boundary that might start something here?”
Evan picked up the discarded egg shells and put them into the compost under the sink. “I’m just telling you about history. Julius chased Pompey through Greece and into Egypt. Pompey got whipped like a beaten egg and the Egyptians handed his head to Caesar to keep the peace.”
Megan added more hot water into the sink. “Are you offering me your head to keep the peace?”
“Not yet. I’m just saying that a story isn’t always finished when it seems to be finished.”
“This is where Cleopatra comes in.”
Evan wiped the counter down with a cloth. “Always got to have a woman in the story somewhere.”
“What do you mean by that?” Megan said as she set the dish rack in place.
Evan put the sugar container away. “A story seems to keep on going until the woman is happy.”
Megan turned off the tap and grabbed the cloth from Evan. “If there’s no happy woman there’s no finish to the story,” she said.
Evan put on the oven mitts and set the creamy dessert into the fridge. “I think that maybe it takes time for things to cool down once they’ve been through the fire.”
Megan set a cleaned pot onto the rack and let it drip. “Okay, let me tell you how I need to have you make me happy.”
Evan grabbed a dish towel and leaned with his back to the counter, arms folded. “Shoot.”
“Sometimes I’d like to but for now let’s just talk about how much time you spend on YouTube.”
“Okay.” Evan picked up the pot to dry it. “There’s a lot of things to learn.”
“Those things never seem to finish.”
“What do you want me to do?” Evan shrugged. “Where do you think I found the Crème Brulee recipe or the Julius Caesar assassination story?”
“And the origin of Mickey Mouse, Daffy Duck, the Green Bay Packers and every show and actress in the country.”
“There’s some great sermons and apologetics on there too.”
Megan set some cutlery into the dish rack. “I think you’re missing something obvious.”
Evan set the towel down and wandered over to his tablet on the table. He scrolled down through the wide diversity of things he had watched. “Oh, yeah, I guess I have watched a lot of music videos.”
Megan snatched the towel and flung it at him. “Wrong answer.”
“Okay, what am I missing?”
Megan shook. “Me! You’re missing me. Every day you get to choose where to spend your time and one day something is going to finish that you don’t even notice.”
Evan set aside his tablet and embraced her.
