“Isn’t he the same one we had last week?” the octogenarian responded as she reached for an Oreo at the coffee bar. “It’s all this change that gets on my nerves. Do you think he’s the one making the changes?”
Thomas stopped and looked back into the sanctuary. “He might be, maybe he got a haircut. He’s still not wearing a tie. At our age you can only handle so much of this nerve damage.”
Winston Abrams tapped his cane against the base of the counter and cleared his throat. “Think I heard that sermon somewhere before. Not right sure as Lester’s hearing-aid kept squealing all service. Now that grates on your nerves.”
Minnie Cooper buzzed into the middle of the tangled senior’s group and let out a loud “beep, beep.” She smiled as she side-stepped around Thomas. “Gotta hurry, a gal can only keep her legs crossed so long. Am I wrong or was he longer this week?”
Francis Shakiru tapped his watch and put it up to his ear. “I usually keep track but I forgot to wind my watch again. The young pup probably knew that. What was he preaching on again?”
“Shhiiin,” Elvira Johnson said with her mouth still full of Oreo.
“Your shin? That leg still bothering you?” asked Harold Williams as he moved closer with his own walker. “I thought it was your knee last week. We’re going to have to put in traffic lights around this coffee bar. It’s like rush hour with all these walkers.”
“I think Elvira was trying to tell us what the preacher was talking about today,” Winston said. “Didn’t he talk about that last week?”
Buzz Collins two-caned it up to the counter. “I hear you can download sermons off the internet now. Maybe he should try that.”
Mary Blanchard lurched her electric wheelchair around the photocopier and stopped inches behind Harold. “Don’t tell me all the Oreos are gone? That’s what I get for waiting until the benediction. Wasn’t that just a wonderful worship time today?”
Winston Abrams added a spoonful of sugar to his coffee. “Buzz, is that my second spoonful or my third? Mary, you asked about the music? Sorry, I couldn’t hear anything but a bunch of banging. I had to turn my hearing-aid off because Lester’s was squealing so much.”
Harold Williams moved his walker to the side to let Mary through. “We’re going to have to put in traffic lights around this coffee bar. It’s like rush hour with these walkers and wheelchairs.”
Thomas Evans turned to Winston Abrams. “Now, what did you think of the preacher? Feel like he tap danced all over your nerves again?”
Winston Abrams looked up. “Was that my second spoonful or my third?”
Mary Blanchard tried to maneuver her electric wheelchair between the walkers. “Do you think they’ll be bringing any more Oreos? If there’s one thing I look forward to after our worship service it’s those Oreos. I’m glad the pastor thought of that.”
Elvira Johnson slowly turned a half circle like a figure skater in super slow motion. “You mean it was the preacher that brought the Oreos?”
Harold Williams sat down on his walker. “You’d think he would bring more if he was going to bring any. “We’re going to have to put in traffic lights around this coffee bar now that everyone wants Oreos.”
Winston Abrams picked up his coffee and moved it along the counter. “Does anyone know if someone is bringing more sugar?”
Buzz Collins set his two canes against the counter and watched them slide and drop like autumn leaves. “Now what am I going to do?” he asked.
Minnie Cooper buzzed in fresh from her visit to the washroom. “Buzz, you dropped your canes again. Here, let me get those for you.” She bent over like a marionette on strings and dragged up the two walking sticks. “Here you go. Now you’ll be dancing like Fred Astaire all over again.”
Francis Shakiru tapped his watch and asked “Does anyone know the time? Is it time to start yet?”
Winston Abrams raised his cane above his head. “We started coming here as kids. Now, we are the gray eight and nothing gets on our nerves. See you next week.”
