With dismal atmosphere
To hover over all the earth
And leave no trace of cheer.
Trees robbed of leaves by fall's brisk wind
Dread frost of winter’s day.
With naked limbs exposed to cold
They’re held within his sway.
The song of winter’s dissonant,
Unorchestrated blues
From howls he breathes of frigidness
Across the land diffused.
The snowman that the children made
With funny carrot nose
Stands statue-like mid winter’s gusts
And doesn’t drop his pose.
Birds huddle on an icy wire,
Where crystal spears hang low.
The only sound of winter here
Is crunch of crusty snow.
To white sheet spread on rimy ground
Comes winter’s weaponry
Of freezing rain and hail and sleet
To pound relentlessly.
I will not bow to winter’s will
But stay warm by the fire.
While outside all is dark and drear,
I’ll watch the flames climb higher.

Loved the whimsy in this poem - reflective and fun - with just a touch of escape beside the fire. Great work.
