The youthful zest for life
Of those who called me “teacher”
In our once-shared world of school.
They’d bounce from yellow buses
To shuffle down long halls
On waves of raucous laughter
And winds of conversation.
They’d loudly announce their presence
With boisterous greetings to friends,
Along with a scuffling of tennis shoes
And the slam of locker doors.
With energy in abundance,
They’d run instead of walk,
While anyone within their path
Was carried along in the storm.
They would not always squander joy
On usual classroom studies,
But their sometime sparks of discovery
Lit up entire rooms.
They’d utilize their gusto
To yell across the lunchroom,
And at football games with rival teams,
They'd cheer till they were hoarse.
If only I could borrow
The youthful zest for life
Of those who called me “teacher”
In our once-shared world of school.
