Five years ago, some of these followers organised a publicity program which draped London’s famous buses with huge banners that read, “There’s probably no God, so stop worrying and enjoy your life.”
An expensive half-message at best.
Yet we may politely ask how much these atheists know. Few would claim above ten percent, which leaves a lot of room for the possibility of God to exist. And if God does exist―and if he is who the bible describes him to be―it just might be worth their effort to take another look.
Not just now, but forever…
Yet we don’t win people over with arguments or threats or counter-slogans alone. For many people have given up on God because of hypocrisy or failure among those who have abused their positions of trust. And if they only hear what sounds like our religious jargon, we may unwittingly―and unintentionally―drive their pain deeper.
I’ve found it helpful to ask people to describe the God they don’t believe in, for their answers often portray a cosmic, spiritual monster who I wouldn’t believe in either.
Our beliefs reflect our personal self-esteem, our sense of destiny and our respect for others. And when crises hit us or those we care about, we may well ask, “Why is this happening? Why me? or What have I done wrong? as we try to make sense of it all.
Then, if satisfactory answers don’t arrive, instead of giving up, we have an opportunity to let God shed his light and the gentle energy of his grace into our confusion. For he can handle all our questions, and he saturates his answers with love and with an inner security that starts to melt our fears.
Better still, this inner security is not just for us; it is designed to radiate out through us; and into the doubts and fears of others who are hurting. People we might not otherwise meet, and people who may just be open to a credible Christian who senses their pain.
God loves to take us out of our comfort zones. And he enjoys surprising people with his availability when they least expect it, and he gets a real kick out of using us for others’ blessing when we are up against it―or when we least expect it.
Mark that one down to how he perfects his strength in our weakness…
God is not afraid of our questions or of anyone else’s, but he wants to do far more than satisfy intellectual pursuits. For having personally been here through Jesus Christ, he understands our highest and lowest moments, and he invites us to relate with him as we search for answers that are bigger than words alone.
And as we get to know him better, we can also learn to give him room to work through us as we spread his integrating and liberating love among those might have given up on God, and who are in real danger of giving up on themselves.
