with early streaks of promise – burnished gold
stretched high above me through day’s opening sky,
many a dawn I’ve viewed with wond’ring eye.
Many a morn I’ve heard the steady tread
of army vast, and into battle led
a skilful, conquering host, moving as one,
many a morn in triumph overcome.
Many a noon, through afternoon’s swift hour,
beneath sun’s burning, blazing, intense power,
a practised sword extinguished waiting foe,
many an afternoon dealt heavy blow.
Many an evening, t’wards the close of day,
I’ve viewed the sun’s departing final ray
and wondered at the meaning of it all,
many an evening fear greeted nightfall.
Many a night of darkness left a hole
that echoed deep the darkness of my soul
when questions rose, unanswered, from the day,
many a night I wished that I could pray.
But then there came a day, oh such a day
when radiance from the sun passed clean away
obliterated by most darksome night
extinguishing each vestige of the light.
Upon a cross, before me, ‘tween two thieves
hung One, oh mystery of mysteries,
whose innocence and purity and grace
shone from His bloodied, love-filled, stricken face.
And t’was as if creation couldn’t bear
to look upon its Maker hanging there
so day gave up the power of her light
and yielded to the darkest black of night.
As trembling earthquake shook the fragile ground,
as heaving sobs broke from some stood around,
light lit my soul, I trusted, I believed,
this righteous man was surely God indeed.
Many a dawn, a day, a night, has passed,
many an hour that cannot be surpassed
filled with His light, His presence and His way,
His many many blessings for each day.
‘It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, for the sun stopped shining…. The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said ‘Surely this was a righteous man.’
