Topic: Endless (01/09/14)
My name is Mr Geoffrey Jones
And I'm a rational man
If I can live on fifty pounds
Then others surely can

I stand upon my mansion steps
Outside my oak front door
Announce that for the coming week
I’m planning to be poor

I’ll make the needed sacrifice
And give cigars a miss
A taxi to the office would
Be something quite remiss

I’ll use the local transport, leave
My Rolls Royce in the drive
And rush hour on the underground
Is something I’ll survive

The lengthy lunch? Good heavens, no
A sandwich in the park
A flask of coffee, “No Frills” brand
Will surely hit the mark

Although I'm earning thousands
I'll spend just fifty pounds
And count my money carefully
To make it do the rounds

I’ll leave my fridge unplundered
Ignore the caviar
The lychees soaked in brandy
I’ll leave inside the jar

I’ll cook creative recipes
With pasta or with rice
No olive-laden sauces but
The meal will taste quite nice

I’m sad that my experiment
Takes place in warm July
And not in cold November ‘neath
A bleak and winter sky

Of course I have no rent to pay
No back-log pile of bills
No tablets for depression that
Across my table spills

I shan’t face the indignity
Of forms or interviews
Or feeling oh so worthless by
What’s written in the news

I’ll never be a sponger
A shirker or a slob
My family comes from money
So I don’t need my job

My week will soon be over
How sad that yours goes on
Your poverty seems endless
While mine has promptly gone

Creative and well-rhymed...
perhaps a little short on the topic. But my opinion might be "out-judged." :-)

Forget the caviar. How can one live without "olive-laden sauces?" :-)...among my favorite lines, btw.

Very enjoyable! Well deserved EC selection. Reminds me of some short term missionaries. I would love you to have a go at writing about the professor at a Christian college I heard about who decided to be an atheist for a year.
