Sometimes that unconditional love is hard to fathom. I don’t know, but I would imagine that it would be especially hard for people who don’t have the Lord in their life to understand what unconditional love is. I believe that when God instituted the family, He had that type of love in mind.
God knew that it would take a selfless love to stay married to one person or to love a child unconditionally. Unfortunately, we do not always succeed at loving people the way that we should and the casualties of our love show as potholes on the path behind us. Everlasting love is not always easy, but it is possible.
We see illustrations of perfect love all through the Bible and especially in the four Gospels. It is only through the study of God’s Word that we can understand His expectation of love. Jesus taught us to love God first, then to love others as much as we love ourselves. He also teaches us to “Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;*”. I am by nature a loner, so learning to prefer someone else’s company over being alone has been a lifelong lesson. I have yet to master it. It is my biggest hurdle to everlasting love.
Consider the Samaritan of the tenth chapter of Luke. He stopped to check on a man that had been left for dead. He doctored him up, took him to an inn, stayed the night to take care of him, paid for his stay and promised the inn keeper to pay for incidentals. I don’t think that account was in the Bible to take up space, I believe God put it there to teach us about love. I’m sure that the Samaritan had some place to go, but he preferred to take care of someone in need instead of getting to where he needed to go. That’s the kind of love that I think Jesus wanted us to have for our neighbors.
I still have a lot to learn about the kind of love that Jesus lived, but it sure does give me comfort to know that Somebody loved me enough to give everything He had. I sleep better at night knowing that even though I mess up every day, He will never stop loving me. Once we believe on Him, we can trust that His love will envelope us forever. If we can just share that type of love with our neighbors, I think that He would be pleased and that our world would be a much better place to live in.
