A new world we’d create
A battle fought with swords and spears
Destroying those we hate
I thought His words of freedom were
For this world, here and now
His Kingdom near, but in our hearts?
I got it wrong somehow
He speaks another language that
I thought to comprehend
But round the things He’s tried to say
My heart and mind won’t bend
He would insist I turn the cheek
From insult walk away
Allow someone to take my cloak
And stand not in their way
He bids me walk the extra mile
Complain not of the load
Resenting not the harsh demand
But cheerful on the road
He tells me that I must forgive
The one who causes harm
That love will conquer every time
And salient hate disarm
He says to mountains I will speak
And cast them to the sea
That I can call those things “not yet”
And then those things will “be”
He speaks of selfless sacrifice
And love that serves the lost
He tells me I should bear a cross
That I must count the cost
The choice I face to learn His tongue
“His Kingdom Come” to see
Or walk away, convinced in heart
His world can never be
