Protector. There comes a time when we all must be protectors. Protectors of our children, protectors of our friends, protectors of our dreams. I wonder what it would have been like to be Jochabed, mother and protector of the baby Moses.
PUTS ON A BIBLICAL HEADDRESS
"I must protect him." Those were my first thoughts as i looked down at my newborn son. Key word: son.
Pharaoh had commanded that every Hebrew boy be thrown into the Nile. My daughter Miriam had been fervently praying that the baby would be a girl, not just because she wanted a sister, but even at 12 she knew the fate of Hebrew baby boys. Her brother Aaron had been born before the edict. I did not join my daughter in that prayer. My only prayer, “your will Jehovah. But if he's a boy, we will need your help.”
And now I hold my son and pray, "Thank you Jehovah for this son. May he do great things for You and our people. Please help me be his protector."
For three months I hid him from the Egyptians but I knew I couldn't hide him forever. Give me wisdom, Jehovah. Help me be his protector"
And the day came when I had to hand my precious little baby to my dutiful daughter so she could put him in that basket of bulrushes. I knew where in the river that Pharaoh's daughter bathed and that she had no child. And if I may humbly say so, my boy was a beautiful baby. Who could resist him?
It was so hard to let him go. I covered him with so many kisses he didn't need another bath. He was bathed in my love. And I must admit with a few tears as well.
It was an eternity waiting for Miriam to return. I pace as I ask myself, did I misunderstand God? Was it a foolish plan? Did the princess have the guards throw my precious baby to the crocodiles?
Finally, Miriam comes running up to me, laughing, her shoulders no longer bowed with the weight of the basket and the weight of responsibility.
"It worked, Mama, it worked! Pharaoh's daughter has adopted our baby and needs a wet nurse. And I suggested you and she agreed!"
Thank you Jehovah for helping me protect my baby. And of course Jehovah thank you for being our protector.
For twenty-four months I was able to nurse Moses (for that's what the princess named him), filling his body with nourishment, but protecting his heart by filling it with knowledge of Jehovah.. I wanted him to have Jehovah's protection with him, when I could no longer protect him.
And that day arrived all too soon. This time i did not bathe my boy with kisses and tears. I hugged him and kissed him once and then handed him to the princess for the final time.
It was a privilege to be my son's protector.
I knew Jehovah would continue to protect him.
Who would have known that the day would arrive when my son would be the protector of his people, their liberator, their guide back to Jehovah.
It was so hard to let my son go. Thank you Jehovah for never letting go of us, for always being our protector.
WOMAN TAKES OFF HEADDRESS
It is so hard to let our children, our friends, our dreams go and turn them over to God's protection. Thank you God, for never letting go of us, for always being our protector.
