Good afternoon, this is Ivan Queery reporting for KRBC News. I am here today at the Bible Expo, where a number of enthusiasts are hoping to win a place in the Guinness Book of Records. Let’s see if anyone is willing to talk to us live on camera.
[interview 1]
This is Mr Angelo Phile. I understand you have quite a collection of Bibles.
“I have every English translation that has been printed in the past hundred and fifty years and most of the revised editions as well.”
That is certainly impressive. Do you have any older versions of the Bible? I remember seeing a copy of the Taverner’s Bible once. Sixteenth Century if I recall correctly.
“No, I limit my collection to the last hundred and fifty years. As I stated before.”
I see. How about the Scriptures in other languages?
“I’m only interested in English. I haven’t learned any other languages. You know what they say: if the King James Version was good enough for Saint Paul, then it’s good enough for me.”
Thank you. I wish you all the best in your presentation.
[interview 2]
This is Polly Glot. I understand that you have memorised John 3:16 in more than 500 languages.
“I have.”
Could you recite it in, say, Norwegian?
“Gud elsket så verden at han ga sin eneste sønn…”
I say, that is quite something. Let’s make it a little harder. How about Catalan?
“Perquè Déu va estimar tant el món que va donar al seu únic fill…”
Very good. What is the most unusual language found in your repertoire?
“Probably Klingon.”
Klingon? You mean, from Star Trek?
“HIja'. It goes like this: qo' muSHa'qu'mo' Qun'a' boghpu'bogh neH puqloDDaj nob.”
I shall have to take your word for it. One more question before we move on: I presume that John 3:16 is your favourite verse in the Bible. Do you have a second favourite?
“Not really. I can’t say that I read the Bible all that much. I tend to focus in on just this one verse.”
I see. Well I wish you all the best. I think.
[interview 3]
I am pleased to introduce Mrs Imogen Volteface. You were telling me how you have memorised the entire Bible from start to finish. That is quite an accomplishment but is it enough? I am sure that I have heard of others who have managed to do much the same.
“You misunderstand. One has said that one has memorised the Bible from finish to start.”
I’m sorry?
“Allow one to demonstrate. The very first verse in the Bible is ‘Amen. People God’s with be Jesus Lord the of grace the.’ That’s Revelation 22:21.”
Don’t you mean the last verse? The first verse would be from Genesis, surely?
“When one has memorised the Bible in reverse, the first has truly become the last and the last the first. The final verse would be from Genesis 1:1 – ‘Earth the and heavens the created God beginning the in.’”
I apologise for my error. If I may ask, what is the point of being able to do this?
“The point? One does not need to justify one’s abilities. Does one ask why a man might want to stick 3000 toothpicks in his beard? Is such a person not a record holder? Does one scoff at playing table tennis with an eleven foot wide paddle? One has even heard of a man performing pull-ups using only his little finger. And you dare to ask me what is the point?”
[Get her off me! Stop recording. Point that camera somewhere else.]
Ladies and gentlemen, I apologise for a brief technical error. I am afraid that we have run out of time. Join us tomorrow when we visit a local valley where the residents have created scale models of the cities of London, New York and Tokyo from modelling clay. It’s certainly a funny world out there!
