After forty-five minutes to an hour of boisterous singing, it was time for the offering, followed by the exhortation from the evangelist. As was expected, the evangelist was loud and spoke with passion. There was also periodic stomping of feet to provide emphasis. It wasn’t too long until he hesitated, reached down and pulled up one sock that was sagging. Unfortunately, it wasn’t long until another stomp, and thump on his Bible, caused the sock to creep down again. He was able to retrieve it a second time without hardly missing a beat.
By this time the energetic proclaimer had everyone’s undivided attention as he was nearing the final points of his message. Alas, the errant sock crept down again. However, this time he paused, rummaged in his coat pocket, then bent down, pulled up his pant leg and secured the sock with a thumbtack! People in the front rows gazed in shocked amazement.
I am not sure how many got the point of the exhortation, or how many changed their lives that night, but though the message was true, something about the evangelist was false. That night the crowd learned for the first time that the man had a wooden leg!
Based on a true incident.
