It should be a good day for this policeman, the first in a new precinct with a promotion, a pay rise and a reason for festivity; he smiled at the thought of tonight’s dinner with the family, when they would all join in the celebration. But the stress in his voice told everyone that the morning was not off to a good start.
“Jenny, do you know where my keys are?” He called with a tight voice from the bathroom.
“Where you put them last, I guess” His wife’s voice held a hint of sarcasm as she answered from the kitchen.
“That’s not helpful, Jen. I forget what I did with them last night, alright, but I’m running late and need them now.” Jeffrey’s voice rose a notch higher as he bordered on panic. “I’m rrreaaaally late, honey. Please help”
“Jeffrey, you’d forget your way home if it wasn’t written down on a piece of paper.” Jenny’s dig at her husband held special meaning. As a young boy his parents had written his name and address on a piece of paper and told him if ever he was lost find a policeman and show it to him. He was now the policeman and she often asked if he had met any lost boys lately.
“Come on, darling. This is getting serious; I can’t be half an hour late on my first day.”
Jennifer’s voice, in her usual quiet, calm tone, answered again from the kitchen. “I am trying to feed our three children their breakfast, get the two eldest off to school and keep Ken’s hands out of the cereal box. What exactly would you like me to do for you?”
“I thought I’d already made that clear, sweetheart.” Jeff only called his wife sweetheart when he was trying to get his way with something. “Help me find my keys.”
“Don’t sweetheart me, you big kid. I’ve got our three children in here with me and I really don’t need another one to look after.” While her words were challenging, Jenny’s voice was full of laughter, making it obvious that she loved her husband and this was all playful banter.
“Darling, I’m serious, this is no time for clowning around. Maybe the kid’s could help.” Jeff’s voice came from the lounge now as he moved through the house. “Sally, you check the dinning room, especially the table. Brian, you check mum and dad’s bedroom, look in my jean’s pocket, maybe I left them in there. Ken, keep your hands out of the cereal and don’t make a mess for mum to clean up.”
“Come on, dad. I can help look too. I’ll check the car, see if you left them there.” Ken called out to his father, as he jumped off the kitchen stool.
“Okay kids, before we help daddy, quickly come here.” The gang all smiled as they hastily ran to mum. They knew what was coming up next and excitedly joined hands as they formed a circle with their mother.
“Heavenly Father, you know where Jeff’s keys are. Help him to find them quickly so that we can all get this morning back on track. Thank you, Father. Amen. Okay guys, off to help daddy.”
As Jennifer finished the prayer, she heard the front door close and she hurried to it, threw it open and saw Jeff quickly striding down the pathway. “Hey, handsome, where are you off to.”
“I told you, I’m late for work.”
“Don’t you dare leave without kissing us all. And, dill-pot, what about those missing keys.”
Jeff hurried back to give his family a cheery kiss goodbye. “You know what, they were in my jacket pocket all along. Thanks for helping, everyone. See you tonight. Got to rush.”
