Arouse me from the daze. I realize
Unchecked deceit my heart had once concealed
Lay blazing, brazen, bare, by fire revealed.
In panic, frantic hands deny sensation,
Lurch groping through hot ash in desperation.
God, please! Just one small glint, one tiny hint
Of selfless sacrifice, of mercy lent.
Ah there, a flash of hope among the coals.
I seize the gleaming gem my soul extols,
But drop it quick-- alas, a fading spark.
My blistered palm bears the Refiner's mark.
A fleeting vapor life ambition driven
Reaped dying embers. Gifts I had been given,
Now burnt wood, hay, and stubble strewn around
Where jewels, gold, and silver should abound.
A holy hush. The smoke in reverence clears.
Celestial rush. The Lamb of God appears.
A sea of precious stones with praise proclaim
His majesty. . . I hear Him call my name.
Christ's hollowed hand presents my heavenly gown.
Bereaved, I bow, extend a hollow crown.
(1 Corinthians 3:12)
