“I hate interviews,” I say to the rain.
By the time I walk through the door of the radio station, I feel like I have a ball and chain clamped to both feet. Since I’m the barker for the circus – I’m the one with the big mouth yellin’ at you tryin’ to get you inside the tent - I’m the one stuck doing these things.
“How may I help you?” the receptionist asks. She stares at the puddle my clothes are making on the tile.
“Yeah, I gotta a ten o’clock appointment. I’m with the circus.”
Miss Receptionist’s eyebrows arch like she can’t believe I have something to offer a Christian radio station. I’m sure the tattoos covering most of my body don’t make a good first impression. The growing puddle isn’t helping either.
The pen between her fingers is drumming on the desk. “With whom?” she asks.
I rub the back of my neck. “I’m here for an interview with some DJ.”
“Uhm, oh-kay.” Her eyebrows arch even higher. “Follow me, please.”
I drag the ball and chain as we walk down a hallway to the control booth. My wet shoes squeak. I find a dry spot on my jeans and wipe my hands. They leave a stain. Yep, I nervous all right.
She raps on the door. It opens. Quick introductions are made. I sit in front of a large boom mike. The DJ sits directly across from me with an identical contraption.
The music cues and a piped recording begins, “Good morning friends. Do you know what time it is? It’s time for ‘What’s New With You?’ starring the one and only Dillon Armstrong. Take it away, Dillon.”
“Welcome listeners. I have a special treat for you today. As some of you know the circus is in town. I have here with me an employee of the circus, Nick Rizzo.”
“Uh, thanks for lettin’ me come.”
“Yes, of course. Nick is here to tell us about The Big Red Top Circus. Is it anything like the Barnum & Bailey circus?” he asks.
“Well kinda, I guess. Only we’re way smaller and have only one ring but…”
The dude cuts me off.
“Okay, Nick. I’ve got to ask. Why did you want to go on a Christian station? We usually don’t promote the circus.”
I run a hand through my shaggy wet hair. “Well, I’m thinkin’ Christian folks might like the circus. It’s wholesome-like, you know. That kinda thing. And besides, I’m a Christian.”
Dillon Armstrong’s eyes get bulgy. He takes in my tats, long hair and tattered jeans. “YOU’RE a Christian?” he blurts out before he realizes he actually said it on the air.
I pull at the collar of my shirt. Is it getting hot in here?
“Sometimes it’s even hard for me to believe it, but yeah, I got saved two years ago.”
Being the pro that he is, Mr. Armstrong recovers quickly.
“Please, share with us how you were saved.”
“In the circus we got a sayin’, ‘The show must go on’ but sometimes that’s tough to do. Like today. It’s rainin’ cats and dogs but we’re gonna have a parade this afternoon rain or shine. After all, the show must go on. On hot days when you can fry an egg on the sidewalk and it’s hotter then h-e-double...uh, you get the point, the show must go on.”
The DJ leans into his mic. “That’s all fine but what does that have to do with you getting saved?”
“Well, I got to thinkin’ about how God really is the one in charge of the weather. We ain’t got no control over it no matter what we want. I figured God’s gonna do what God’s gonna do. Then I got to wonderin’ - are there other areas where God is in charge? I decided that He’s pretty much the boss of it all. After that it didn’t take long for me to give Him my life. I’d rather have Him in charge of it cuz’ when I’m in charge I make a big ol’ mess out of things.”
“Incredible story, Nick. Unfortunately, we’re out of time for today.” He actually smiles. “Maybe you could join us again tomorrow. Don’t forget, folks, the show must go on. See you this afternoon at the parade. Rain or shine.”
