It was late afternoon as she drove the steep and winding drive down to the bottom of the hill. Another mile of winding turns along a narrow two-lane road, she came to a four-lane intersection at the highway where she careened left - too soon – and into the on-coming traffic lane.
Unusual for that time of day, the roads were empty except for a police car which immediately hastened her to the side of the road. When the two officers questioned her about her sobriety, she was indignant. “I’m not drunk. I don’t even drink!” she said, with slurred words. Then after a lively debate, the officers politely provided her a free ride to the local Police Station.
Upon her arrival one of the police officers called Sam, her fiancé’, to notify him of her visit to the station. Sam soon arrived, and upon quick evaluation he realized what had happened: Sheryl’s diabetes had caused her blood sugar to escalate far outside the normal range, and no one, including Sheryl, knew when she had last taken her insulin shot. Immediately she was released into Sam’s care and taken home where her blood sugar was quickly stabilized.
The next day Sheryl arrived at her wedding in glorious array and sauntered down the aisle to Sam. Picture perfect, they stood together as if the previous night was long forgotten. The wedding ran smoothly without a hitch. However, its success was due largely to the women who had rushed to help in the final hours of preparation.
For weeks plans were underway for the simple ceremony. Finally, the time had arrived, and everything appeared in order with all the guests invited. Yet there was one, not so minor detail being overlooked - the food.
Numerous times it was discussed between Kathy, the wedding coordinator, and Sheryl, that Sheryl would make the he meal arrangements. Yet in her dreamlike state, she somehow misunderstood the catering would be organized by someone other than herself. This fact was not discovered until just days before when Kathy cheerfully asked Sheryl, “And who did you finally find to do the catering?”
Sheryl appeared dumbfounded. “I thought you were taking care of that.”
With this new discovery, Kathy scrambled to find last minute recruitments.
Women from various churches willingly rushed in to help, and on the day of the ceremony, a vast array of signature dishes arrived in the church kitchen right in time for the grand event. The ceremony went beautifully without a hitch. And all attending was served, with fine china on white linen, an exquisite ala pot-luck.
Sam and Sheryl wore radiant smiles as they promenaded side-by-side down the aisle, seemingly without a care in the world, to begin their mid-life journey together. However, it was about a month into their marriage when their lives would take another twist.
God had a plan Sheryl would soon discover, with special friendships that would fulfill a purpose in more ways than she could understand. Soon many would see, that amid crisis, when things go askew, is when God shows His great mercy through others and pulls us closer to Him.
