In an animal very unique,
But you found us and then named us after your sin,
When you know not at all what you speak.
In the rain forest trees we may seem to take ease,
But we're integral parts of God's plan,
We host algae and moths. We are so much less "sloths,"
Than are many a woman or man.
Though we will not be found running fast on the ground,
We are agile while moving through trees.
So get out of your bed and try hanging instead,
And we'll see if you do it with ease.
Would you often be found hanging out on the ground
Where a jaguar or other large cat
Would quite happily munch you right down for its lunch?
No? We guessed you had not thought of that.
And just how fast and far, were you made as we are,
Would you move with one fourth muscle mass,
But with all you've been given, a lot of you live
On your sofas while hours they pass.
So you may not approve of how little we move,
But how much do you think you might laze,
And how sluggish you'd feel if digesting each meal
Took you three or four weeks, not just days?
In the canopy, news that some humans will choose
Not to fend for the food that you eat,
So that others must work, to provide what you shirk,
Reeks of indolence creatures can't beat!
Nor do we ever steal from another "sloth's" meal,
For we gather what God has supplied,
But some humans will thieve, though it's hard to believe,
But their laziness can't be denied.
And we do not cast young on the trash heap like dung,
Because pleasure for life we would trade.
No, we nurture each one 'til it's safely begun
Understanding the skills we've displayed.
So you humans would dare of your worst to compare
With the traits of our God-given kind!
It is much to your shame that you've given this name
To God's work you should not have maligned.
