I slice a piece of lemon chiffon
Cake, and wash it down with juice,
Hot cross buns, and cherry mousse.
What’s this? Hunger pains galore
Have me reaching one time more.
Just once.
The day is quickly passing by,
And work I must. I give a sigh.
Awaiting me, a list of chores,
From washing clothes to sweeping floors,
Cleaning toilets, making beds,
Sampling loaves of fresh-baked bread.
I sink into my cozy chair.
(However did that rip get there?)
A workout show is bidding me
To get up, stretch, and flex my knee.
I struggle, but I do not cheat;
I can perform the stunning feat.
Just once.
The effort was too much, I fear;
I need some food, perhaps a smear,
Of custard filling in a cake,
Or smoked salmon, just a flake.
Revived by cups of honeyed tea,
I nibble on a piece of brie.
I’ve tried the diets, counting grams,
Never touching tarts and jams,
Chewing fodder meant for goats,
Pumpkin seeds and boiled oats,
Lettuce leaves and garden peas.
Critter food is not for me.
None.
A depressing movie makes me weep.
Scones and cookies, went to sleep.
Wake to belly all agrumble.
Polished off the berry crumble.
So, I must make a fresh dessert.
(A button just popped off my shirt!)
An easy stroll, down to the shops;
I’m out of cream and Coke and chops.
And beans, you know, the candy kind,
And little peppermints combined
With caramel corn and gummy bears,
And a whipped cream-filled eclair.
Only one.
Now I need a little snack,
Just to get my vigor back.
Perhaps, a sandwich, ham and cheese.
Maybe I could even squeeze
In several bags of nuts or chips,
Toffee bars, some licorice whips.
My doctor says I am in trouble.
He wasn’t kind. “It isn’t muscle.”
My bones are bigger, I surmise;
It’s not to do with steak or pies.
Daft man, how dare he denigrate?
(He said to use a smaller plate.)
Just one?
It’s been a day, so time to chill.
I think I’ll fire up the grill
For sausages and corn and ribs,
With hot dogs for the little kids,
Baked potatoes, relish green,
Chocolate and marshmallow creme.
Evening comes with lights turned low,
Time to bask in TV’s glow,
Master Chef, Food Factory,
Paula Dean’s new recipes.
Inhaling popcorn by the cup,
I long for love to me fill me up.
Just once.
