Most sensible folk are still in bed at this unholy hour on a Saturday morning. Not me. I’m busy grappling with the conundrum of today’s mountainous to-do list and lack of time. A wet, sandy nose pokes at my hand, bringing my racing thoughts to a standstill.
The nose in question is connected to a medium-sized shaggy dog. Although usually black and white, today she’s black, white and sable due the quantity of sand in her coat. Under that curly, profuse fringe, two big brown eyes alternate between my face and my pocket full of treats, telling me “It’s treat time, master!”
The wind drops as we scramble onto the next section of beach. A Labrador approaches us and soon two dogs are happily gadding about, their tracks creating a work of art on the sand’s golden canvas. I lean back against the boulder sea wall, watching her in her element. Satisfied after a quick check that I’m still there, she continues playing until the Lab and its master head home. Misty follows after them, but I call her back. She stops, turns and gallops towards me. She skids to a halt and sits like a pro before I give the command, looking up at me for approval for anticipating my wishes.
Becoming ‘master’ to Misty has given me a whole new perspective of what it means to be a master. Because Misty knows I want the best for her, she depends on me for food, care and leadership. Without that knowledge, such trust couldn’t happen. Nor would it be possible without me knowing her well enough to understand what makes her tick, her strengths and vulnerabilities, and then giving her boundaries to keep her safe. Take a decomposing piece of bait, for example. A champion bin-raider and food thief, I know that she’s ruled by her stomach. She sees a tasty snack; I see the potential injury the attached fishing hooks would cause, never mind the stomach upset resulting from such a meal. Thankfully, she will begrudgingly leave it alone when told to. Her decision to obey, especially when it means not doing what she wants, is an act of trust borne from the desire to please me. I am her world and this loyal, faithful companion would go with me to the ends of the earth. Ours is a two-way relationship of trust and mutual respect, not fear and domination.
Just as Misty trusts and depends on me, I, too, depend on my Master and trust Him to take care of me in every way. The reason I trust Him is not because He is almighty God, but because He’s my loving Father. Being my Maker, He knows me and understands me in ways that nobody else can. He knows what kind of messes I’m going to get myself into, but never abandons me to them. Instead of ramming my stupidity down my throat, He showers me with His grace and mercy. Because of this, I learn from my mistakes. I am completely secure knowing that whatever happens, even if I were to lose everything or do the worst thing imaginable, I can never lose His love. I can depend on Him to meet my every need, always.
But unlike my Master, I’m just an imperfect human being. I can only try to be a good leader, be that as a good parent to my kids or a good master to Misty, by following my Master’s example of loving leadership.
The seagulls’ shrieking overhead calls me back to earth. Leaning back against the mighty wall of rock enveloping me, I look at the sea, the sky and then again at Misty, nestling at my feet, stretching her paws and grunting in contentment. Secure in the knowledge I am there with her, she relaxes, nuzzling her warm head against my leg. Above, the light of the rising sun bathes us in its glow.
I understand how Misty feels. Surrounded by the handiwork of my Master, I bask in the warmth of my reaffirmed security. The tide ebbs as an overwhelming sense of peace washes over me; whatever happens today, everything will be okay. I am safe and secure in the embrace of my Master.
