We work, we strive, and multiply
It seems that way until we die;
Rarely see the road ahead; occupied until we bed;
Hardly ever question why
Philosophers would have us ask
The purpose of our daily task;
Was the reason some great scheme? Is there more than what we seem?
We often have no time to ask
If we take time to contemplate
The purpose of our human state;
Are we just animal at base? Some sentient organic race?
Survival of the fittest state?
But some would argue skillfully
That humans live life willfully;
They have the measure of this sphere; mankind is all there is down here;
A humanist philosophy
This at least we must make clear
We’re more than animals; don’t fear;
Survival is their working mode; they can see no other road
Is this our purpose here?
If mankind is the central one
Around which rotates earth and sun;
Beyond mankind there’s nothing more; so there’s no afterlife in store;
Death terminates life’s run
The Bible does God’s will record:
Its song a clear and mighty chord:
To place our lives in God’s own hand; to spread his Word throughout the land;
Our mission, purpose, for the Lord.
