A man of dirt created by the Almighty in His own image now living, breathing, talking and moving. Such a thing of beauty!
[Genesis 2:7 KJV}: "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul."
Now man lives on His earth and so does every living thing. In non-earth environments like the moon and outer space, there is no air and therefore nothing lives. No breath; no air; no life.
I think it is incredible that insects breathe through holes called spiracles which are all over their bodies, that fish breathe oxygen dissolved in water. Even larger animals and trees breathe. Trees, however, breathe in carbon dioxide which we breathe out and thankfully they produce oxygen that we need. We are codependent creations all needing to breathe the air that God created.
'The air-breathing lungs of mammals, including humans, must be dry and empty of fluids to work properly. When we take a breath, tiny air sacs in our lungs pull oxygen out of the air and carry it to our bodies' cells'.

A classic everyday occurrence or dysfunction occurs in hospitals when a patient's respirations cease or slow down, This dysfunction is usually followed by or precedes a cardiac arrest. If nothing changes, death occurs. God made us so.
A stark example comes to mind; it is of a newborn baby or an adult patient in a hospital whose breathing has stopped or are too slow and shallow to facilitate life. Immediate action has to take place in order to prevent brain damage. Nurses and doctors take action. CPR has to be started immediately. Chest compressions to stimulate the heart and oxygen is forced into the mouth while the nose is held shut. Within seconds or minutes, the heart resuscitated, beats normally and takes over.
Similarly, if a Christian fails to suck in or inspire truths from God's Word, faith diminishes and can leave altogether. Faith must be inspired or breathed in by prayer, reading The Word or through fellowship with other believers. For persecuted Christians deprived of the freedom to worship; it's like de-oxygenation.
Another factor that we humans deal with daily is pollutants. Our atmosphere can or may be polluted by deliberately negative actions which, thank God can be repaired over time. Substances like cigarette smoke, coal, carbon monoxide, lead and ozone pollute our air, and as we breathe them in we become ill because they damage our lungs. Healthy bodies became ill. Environments are changed...
I first became acutely aware of the effects of cigarette smoke when in an operating theatre, I saw the blackened lungs of a smoker. When coal was used to keep British homes warm the sky was often grey. With knowledge, this practice ceased and thankfully, the air became clearer again.
Even in the sea, the awesome creation of God can be seen.
Aquatic creatures breathe in oxygen through gills. The oxygen has dissolved in the water they live in and they take breaths but not as we do. 'The lungs of mammals would not work very well for a fish, because one breath underwater would fill them with fluid and make them useless. Nonetheless, fish need oxygen to breathe, so in order to remove oxygen from the water, they rely on special organs called "gills."
