I heard Alissa’s sobs before she entered the kitchen.

"I will never get hired!" she wailed.

"Listen," I said. "What’s in your heart?"

"Teaching…"

"How do you know?”

"It suits me perfectly. I'm a good teacher but the jobs are so scarce right now, I will be broke and never get to use my degree! I’ll be a sub forever!"

“Do you believe God?” I asked. “If God said it, He will provide."

"I know, but when?" She moaned.

"It will happen when the timing is right. He has a plan all set for you. You need to wait upon Him for He has already set it in motion."

"But…"

"No 'buts'! Just keep subbing and getting connections. Do good work, as unto the Lord, and you will see results."

Within the next year, she subbed for a teacher in another district. This teacher became school administrator in a small town thirty miles away. One of her first hires...my daughter.

Alissa’s interview lasted five whole minutes. The fall semester, she started teaching kindergarten. Twelve years later, she’s still the happiest teacher ever, moving on to higher heights and degrees.

I observed her teaching one day. She had thirteen little bodies that paid attention to her every word. She said 'sit' and they 'sat'.

One day a little girl had a meltdown. My daughter said, 'You need to go wash your face.' The little girl did just that and calmed herself down. I couldn’t believe how she had become so adept at handling children.

My daughter, she makes me proud.

Yes, wait upon the Lord for he cares for us and gives us the desires of our heart.

I can relate to this. My daughter teaches first grade and I'm so proud of her. Perhaps add some internal dialog or body language to make it pop even more and avoid dramatic taglines like she moaned, he laughed, she wailed. Instead use a body language to show the frustrating. For example: "I'll never find a job!" Choking back tears, she swiped away the snot. Yeah that's graphic, and I did that on purpose to show how you can paint a picture, plus I love a good snot story. I also used a contraction and the words a bit to make it sound more authentic. We were taught not to use contractions in formal writing, yet most people speak using contractions. You did a great job writing on topic and have a clear message. Congratulations on ranking 13 overall. Happy Dance!
