What a comfortable feeling considering a soft, fuzzy escape from the pain and sorrows of the day, Death will be dark nothingness, like falling asleep into a void. What’s left of me, my earthly remains, used to fertilise the firmament. Those who mourn my passing will remember the good times we enjoyed together and no doubt hold a party for a final farewell. After the grieving I will become a mere memory hidden in the knowledge that their turn will come.
The lovers of fairy tales tell me there are alternative schools of thought, depending on their background. Hearing myths and legends I have smiled in pity at the thoughts of reincarnation – maybe as a butterfly? – Or, gods forbid, an endless train of future existences. Then there is the option of Allah and a choice between a martyr’s reward or costly disobedience. I gather from what a Muslim acquaintance told me that according to the Koran it is a duty to assert his religion in any country he enters. Failure to do so, or worse, to accept another culture, would be a guarantee of hell.
How unlikely there is any substance to the possibilities on offer. It’s all in our minds though I have looked at ways in which Greeks and Romans worshipped their vengeful gods, and the many thousands of choices give to the Hindus as to which horrible manifestation of animal, snake or many headed monster one can hope to appease for possible though doubtful reward.
Then there is the consideration of the age of our habitation, earth, and the debateable idea of evolution. All the millions of years it must have taken to become as we are now, and why are some still swinging in trees while I walk upright. I guess another few million years may provide the answer. That brings me to another problem – will the earth last that long? According to statistics we are busy destroying it ourselves what with causing global warming and killing off flora and fauna so that many creatures will be extinct before the next century. I am pleased I won’t see that but feel sorry for my grandchildren. What sort of future will they inherit?
I look forward to meeting my grandson’s girl friend whose name is Tuesday and sounds as weird as her name. She seems to be what we would term a holy roller and surprisingly has managed to intrigue Jonathon enough to attend church with her. A place I have entered under duress only for weddings and funerals.

The world is doomed. Having met Tuesday I admire the gullibility of the younger generation. I must admit she was courteous. She even spoke of my age, as if I didn’t know I was approaching my seventh decade and asked if I was born again. I had no idea what she meant but then she questioned me further. It appears that she is a real holy-roller and my grandson is fascinated by her attitude, I told her I have attended church but don’t believe all the mumbo jumbo that is spoken. Then she asked if what I believed was untrue would I want to know? I wondered what a young whipper snapper could know more than I with years of experience. She was not offended.
“If what I believe is true,” she said, “can you afford to risk being wrong?”
“What do you mean?” I asked. “How can you know more about the world than I with all my years of learning since before you were born?”
“That’s because I am ‘Born Again’ into God’s family,” she said.
So sincere, she is, and went on to talk about believing in the price paid for her when Jesus Christ was crucified and how her life is governed by the presence of the Holy Spirit.
She produced a Bible and asked me to read Romans 3:23 and 6:23. Then Galatians 6:7&8 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life
I am no worse than others and better than most. I pay a charity regularly besides trying to be honest at all times. From what Tuesday tells me sin is ignoring the Creator God who has revealed Himself in nature according to Romans 1:18 onwards.
Is it worth looking further for myself?
Fiction.
