In a home above five miles away, Kay lived with her mother and siblings. It was also her first day at the school, but she was anticipating the day even though her last year in her previous school was a disaster. She had made enemies and few friends and there was a lot of ‘war’; which she had won. During that year her parents got divorced and she had not seen Mum smile for months. Home was not a happy place. Pa was in jail.
“Similar stories like the two girls’ pervaded this group of tenth graders,” many teachers often observed to each other. Some girls like Savi were in stable homes while others like Kay were not. Within two weeks of the term, the teachers had noted the subgroups, as they called them.
One day, Mrs Jones, the science teacher said to no one in particular, “Who will win this war? First, there are the ‘troublemakers who are extroverts’ who consistently speak up and often negatively, then there are the ‘soloists’ who travel alone and were mainly studious and introverted, and the third group are the smiling ‘honeydew’ ones who seem to have inner peace”.
The teachers had them mentally classified by their behaviour patterns, their compliance and their predictability. In the staffroom, the teachers had conversations mainly to comfort each other. Teaching high school was a challenge. Keeping content accurate while keeping order in class felt like war. Mrs Jones wanted to help Kay so badly because she knew that this was a turning point year for her. She and the behaviour specialist had a meeting with her mother and shared their concerns and felt that she was open to suggestions that they made.
Kay was good at sports so she was encouraged in that. With her mother’s permission, they were able to get the Christian counsellor from the local church involved in mentoring them both. Troublesome times in class did diminish and Kay seemed to change. She became less explosive and less warlike.
Towards the end of the school year, the school had to pick a star student. They all agreed that some students stood out, especially Savi. Her grades were excellent, she followed orders, had assignments in on time and her presentations were neat. However, the revolution in Kay could not be ignored. “Who will win the award?” was a frequent question.
An event brought things to a climax.
One day on the sports field Kay was running when she suddenly fell down screaming. All the students flocked to her side but in the midst of all knelt Savi. She was praying out loud in Jesus’ Name. The EMTs arrived and took Kay to ER where she was diagnosed with a fractured left knee which occurred before she fell. Kay was in trouble. That night, Savi got her mother to take her to see Kay. She sat near her bed and prayed for her healing. She then went home and prayed with her family.
The next day an X-Ray showed an unexpected change; Kay’s knee was healed! Life changed for both girls. They became fast friends and even went to church together. The war was over in Kay’s heart. This influenced the class and the teachers were all so thankful.
“The war was won by love” was Kay’s frequent smiling words to Savi. The ‘best kid’ award was awarded to both girls. Savi proved herself a worthy ambassador of Christ.
