I glance at my cell phone. Someone’s tweeted that it’s National Skittles Day. Why would they have a national day for a brand of sweets? I open the Google app on my phone and do a search. Oh, there are different kinds of skittles. It’s also a game where you use a ball to knock down pins at the end of an alley. Kind of like bowling. I bring up YouTube and search for videos. Oh look, here’s one where they’ve made a table game out of it. That looks like fun.
Ten minutes later and I’m no closer to getting the answers I need. Put phone aside. Open Bible randomly. I land in the middle of 1 Kings 19. Scanning for relevance. Some prophet called Elijah is in a cleft in a rock when …
Something rubs against me. My puppy is curled up with her head on my foot. That is sooo cute. I reach for my phone and take a photo. My 472 closest friends on Facebook really need to see this. I upload the photo and add a caption: “Isn’t Muffy the cutest dog ever?” I hit the ‘post’ button and put my phone back on the table.
Now where was I? Elijah was in a cleft in the rock. There was a powerful wind, but God wasn’t in the wind. Oh it’s ages since I’ve heard Wind Beneath my Wings. I love that song. I bring up the iTunes app on my phone and find dozens of versions. Bette Midler, Sheena Easton, Willie Nelson. I listen to a few of the samples and decide on an instrumental by the Pan Pipes Chillout Band. Click the ‘buy’ button. Wait for it to download. Done.
So Elijah is still in that cleft in the rock and there’s an earthquake, but God isn’t in the earthquake. Why would anyone think God was in an earthquake anyway? Earthquakes only bring destruction, like the one that decimated Christchurch a few years ago. I text my friend in New Zealand.
“Hey Sarah, just thinking about the earthquake. Have they rebuilt the cathedral yet?”
Three bouncing dots tell me she’s texting back.
“Still in ruins. They say it will take another ten years.”
Our texts ping pong through cyberspace for a while and then it’s back to Elijah. There was a fire, but God wasn’t in the fire. Seriously, this dude must wonder what he’s doing up that mountain.

It’s a Facebook notification. Twenty-seven people have ‘liked’ the photo of my dog and four of those have commented on how gorgeous she is. I reply to all of the comments. Maybe I should put the pic up on Instagram and Pinterest as well. I open those accounts, and paste the photo with new captions. Muffy will go viral for sure. By the time I get back to Facebook, twelve more people have liked the photo. Then a box pops up with a news headline.
“Prince Harry’s heartbreak over broken engagement.”
Oh no! He’s supposed to be marrying Meghan Markle any day now. I open the news story, my heart galloping like one of Harry’s polo ponies. I scan down. Phew! It’s not his engagement that’s broken. He’s commiserating with one of his friends.
Back to Elijah. He finally hears God in a still, small voice. I wish God would whisper to me like that. I’ve been sitting here for half an hour with zippo. Where are my answers, God?
Buzz! Buzz! Buzz!
My phone alarm tells me it’s time for my next appointment. I close the Bible and push up from the table with a sigh. It’s no use praying when God’s not listening.

Our modern world is noisy and there are many distractions. Finding that quiet time in that deep and quiet place is not easy.
When I find it, it is often in the middle of the night..when all are asleep...
Be patient with HIM.

Electronics sure have a way of distracting me from the real message.
