Apparently, it was not the first time she called my name, or the second. The class anxiously waited to see how many times it would take before I heard the teacher’s voice. I seemingly tuned-out all the noise around me as I became engrossed in the textbook I was reading.
To help clarify this embarrassing moment, let me take you back to the old country schoolhouse where this all occurred and where I attended sixth through the eighth grades. There was only one classroom, one teacher, and grades one through eight. In front of the room were several chairs placed in a half circle near the teacher’s desk. The teacher would call children of a couple of grades,(say 1st and 2nd), up front to teach reading, arithmetic or other subjects at those grade levels while the rest of the children studied in their seats. Next called were 3rd and 4th grades. This continued until all children were taught at their particular grade level.
In order for students at their desks to be able to study, they would have to tune-out the noise of the teacher teaching in the front of the class. This was something I was ver-r-r-y good at doing. Although embarrassed, I felt better when the teacher complimented me on getting so engrossed in my studies.
I still have the ability to tune-out the noise around me. Only now, I do my best to tune-out the things of this world.
When the world tells me I should accept all religions, I hear my Lord tell me thou shalt have no other gods before me (Duet. 5:7).
When the world tells me it is acceptable to live together before marriage, I hear me bible tell me that I should abstain from fornication (I Thess. 4:3-6).
When the world tells me to drink and party, I hear the Word tell me I should be not drunk with wine, but rather be sober (I Thess 5:5-8).
When the world tells me I should accept gay marriage, I hear the Word tell me men lying with men is an abomination to God (Levi.18:22).
When the world says I should seek revenge for harms done to me, my Lord tells me I should love my enemies and pray for those who despitefully use me.(Matt. 5:44)
There are many other things this world is trying to tell us; keep the bible out of schools, don’t offend anyone by telling them about Jesus, don’t celebrate Jesus at Christmas and Easter, and the list goes on.
The world is shouting louder and louder every day, trying to turn our hearts and minds away from God. We need to be more diligent in downing out the noise of the world with the truth of the Bible and the words of the Lord.
The best way I have found to do this is to find that quite place alone with God, reading His word, praying for His directions and listening for that still small voice.
Unlike the children’s reaction to my hearing problem earlier, zoning out worldly ways and tuning into the voice of God is no laughing matter. Sometimes peer pressure and social pressure can be overwhelming. However, if we continue to hear the voice of the Lord and diligently read and grasp the truths of God Word, we can trust God to help us make the right decisions. Keep your ears open to what the Lord is saying
