The girders running under the railway bridge were wide enough for a foot to fit. At regular intervals there were struts to hold on to. However, the swiftly flowing water of the Richelieu River, 250 metres wide is clearly visible below and a deterring factor. To go or not to go that was the question! Living in the small Quebec town of Richelieu we had all heard stories about people jumping off the vehicular bridge further downstream and perishing as the strong current took them over the falls.
This was the early 60's in Canada. As teenagers a number of us spent time together on Saturday nights, at various homes. Usually in the basement room, we danced to Elvis, The Everly Brothers and popular artists of the day. We had soft drinks and simple snacks. Parents were home to chaperone. Friendships were formed during our forty minute bus ride to and from high school five days a week. We also met during the summer school holidays over the months of July and August. Various activities would be suggested. This was one of them. We walk on the girders under the train bridge to the fourth pier. There lowering ourselves by rope to the base of the twenty foot pylon a waiting motor boat, driven by Jim Nelson*, would take us to shore. Afterwards, we could all go for a soda at the local restaurant and listen to the latest hits on the juke box.
While we were debating (or plucking up courage) a freight train loudly rumbled overhead shaking the ground. Time to go, there wouldn't be another train for a while meaning less chance of being spotted. Peer pressure proved too great. I joined the 'gang' and tremulously managed to navigate the endless maze of cross-beams and grab hold of the struts on the way across. I tried not to look at the river below. Sliding down the rope seemed a 'breeze' as, relieved, I set foot on the pylon base. A celebratory ride up river was followed by a 7Up float or milkshake at the corner cafe. The sound of rock and roll in the background and much happy chatter about our accomplishment were a fitting end to our memorable adventure.
Many years later, now married with children, I found myself standing at the top of a flying fox. This was one of many activities we could take part in at a weekend Christian camp. I was repeatedly assured it was fun and there was no problem about safety. However, it seemed
like such a long way down and it appeared a real 'head of steam developed' as you approached the end. Again to go or not to go. Someone else took their turn while I made up my mind. 'Yes!' With a silent prayer I jumped. It was exhilarating and fun! I was glad I made that choice.
In the book of Ruth we read of a pivotal time of decision making. Because the Lord had provided food there, Naomi decides to return to Judah with her widowed daughters-in-law, Ruth and Orpah. Both started out with her. When she first urged them to return to their own people, both declared they would go with her. Naomi emphasized the probable outcome of that choice. Still Ruth remained adamant she would not turn back. But Orpah weighed up her options. Stepping into the unknown with Naomi and Ruth or returning to a familiar lifestyle. She chose the latter and after saying goodbye affectionately to her mother-in-law, there is no further record of her in the Bible.
However, Ruth's love and dedication to Naomi see her rewarded by God. She remarries and becomes an ancestor of Jesus Christ.
When faced with 'to go or not to go' we can clearly see the differences resulting from the choices made by Ruth and Orpah. As Christians, we have the Holy Spirit as our teacher and guide when making decisions. If we ask, He will answer 'Go' or 'Don't Go' He is also our protector. As a teenager I knew there was God but didn't follow Him. Still, looking back I believe He protected me on the train bridge as well as the flying fox.
It is comforting to be reminded that everything the Lord asks us to do is for our good as well as His glory. Be brave, step out leave your comfort zone, get cold feet, He is with you.
