“Cool.”
“You’re to be on your very best behavior. Capiche?”
“Aren’t I always?”
“Really? You’re going to try to convince ME of that! My memory may be fading a bit, but there are certain things permanently engraved in my mind, and I have only YOU to thank.”
“I was just trying to liven things up a little. Your family gatherings can be real yawners, if you know what I mean.”
“You certainly know how to wake the dead in my family. I’ll give you that.”
“Let me think. Are you talking about the time I referenced a certain unsavory great-aunt and a few of her well-known brushes with the law?”
“Well-known? Well-known? I was one of only two people who knew about those and the other party has been silently “resting in peace” for years. You ruined three generations of good memories with that one, Blabber Mouth. I still can’t look my cousins --- first, second AND third --- in the eye at Christmas.”
“Yeah, well. That’s what a little too much after-dinner wine will do for you. Loose lips and sunken ships. It was more like a fleet with that one, I’ll admit.”
“And I’ll thank you to leave the finer points of our family tree completely out of the conversation. Some things truly are sacred, you know.”
“Oh you mean that one cousin whose European characteristics seem a little out of …”
“That’s exactly what I mean. Don’t even think about those things; you know they’ll bubble up and out at the first lull in the conversation.”
“Right. Don’t think about the RED car. Sure thing. Like that ever works.”
“Look. It’s time to leave. I just need your word that you will simply smile a lot and only speak words of ‘edification’ about everyone. Just like the scripture says.”
“Got it. One more thing?”
“What now?”
“You’ve got a little smudge of red lipstick on your teeth.”
