I used to think that marriage
Was a long, flowing white gown.
Full of love and holding hands,
Endless dates out on the town.
I thought that when I fell in love,
An emotional miracle was sure.
No more days of loneliness,
Or feeling insecure.
The day I finally married,
Although my dress was white,
Wasn’t the grand event I had dreamed,
But for the moment, it felt right.
During our first year together,
We tried to learn each other’s ways.
We struggled with our ups and downs,
But we survived those turbulent days.
At one time I thought it wouldn’t work,
And threw my ring across the floor.
I wasn’t sure if it was worth the fight,
Not what I had signed up for.
Remembering our vows, we made it work,
We managed to mend our rifts.
We started to accept the trials that came,
And appreciate each other’s gifts.
Soon came our three precious babies,
And all that children bring.
Our patience ever being tested,
But I held on to my ring.
Watching the children as they grew,
We were a team, united as one.
Now as they leave, we still hold hands.
Yet our work has just begun.
Looking back on our life together,
It is very clear to see.
We survived it all because of Jesus.
Not two in a marriage, but three.
My advice to those who plan to marry,
Be sure you’re committed and know
That marriage is meant to last a lifetime,
And takes work, to make love grow.
