Topic: Right and Left (07/31/14)
When my grandson, Mikah, was younger I spent an afternoon teaching him the difference between his right hand and his left hand. Using a technique I had learned as a child, I told him to hold his hands out in front of him with his fingers together and thumbs touching. “Which hand makes an “L” shape?” I asked him.
Looking at his hands, following the invisible line running down the side of his fingers and across the thumb, he held out his left hand and said, “This one, grandma!” I showed him how he could use that simple trick to help him remember his right from his left. The word “left” begins with the letter “L”, I instructed him.
We spent a wonderful time together, walking on beautiful trails in a local nature park, and as we came to different junctions I would say, “Which path will take us left?” or “Which path is the right path?” He would hold up his hands and provide the directions and we would continue on our way. This simple but effective trick, reinforced with practical experience, enabled him to learn an important skill.
As we navigate the paths in our life, we come to junctions where we need to make the correct decision on which way to proceed. If we aren’t careful and choose the wrong direction, we may end up living with unforeseen consequences and penalties. We can’t simply hold up our hands and rely on a trick to tell us the precise way to go. Discovering the best choices for our lives entails putting our hands together and asking for God’s direction. God’s direction is always right and He will guide us on the path we should walk. Spending time daily in His word, the Bible, will teach us the difference between correct choices and wrong decisions so when faced with a situation we can know which direction to take. Practical experience and relying on God to direct us reinforces a vital life skill. We begin to understand God knows the paths our lives and we need to trust Him.

Your sound like a very patient and effective teacher of children.

Good job.

I like a little white between paragraphs. I am getting old an it is easier for me to read.

The voice you wrote in displayed a gentle and caring spirit.

Very good advice here and a good illustration to get your point across. I never knew that little trick for lefties. As a teacher, it would have come in handy.
