Topic: Blessed (10/11/12)
(Jesus is standing, stage right. If available: use a diffused, white spotlight shining on Jesus from above. When Jesus finishes speaking, the spotlight fades off, and another spotlight fades on to the Bee Good family members. Each Bee is wearing a large name tag.)


JESUS
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

WANNABEE
That sounds really good. I really wannabee like Jesus some day.

HUMBLEBEE
I’m just sick of my life—just so sick of being sick and tired and feeling guilty all of the time for my sin. I need to change…today.

WANNABEE
I wanna change and bee like you Humblebee, some day.

HUMBLEBEE
(kneels down) Lord, I humble myself in Your presence. I need You—I need Your help.


JESUS
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

HONEYBEE
I am so sorry for your loss, Bumblebee.

BUMBLEBEE
(they embrace) Thank you… thank you so much. I miss my little dog. He was my Buddy... He was my best friend... I loved him.

HONEYBEE
I know you did. We all loved him.

BUMBLEBEE
Such unconditional love, just like Jesus.


JESUS
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

FREEBEE
I’m lookin’ to get whatever I can from whomever I can whenever I can for free!

HUMBLEBEE
Freebee, the key to the kingdom of God is not how much you can get—it’s how much you give. Start with yourself.

FREEBEE
No way, Jose! I’m lookin’ for the next handout. There’re freebees everywhere, Humblebee—just open your eyes, bee! Hey, that reminds me: you got some money I can borrow?

HUMBLEBEE
You mean have? No sir, Freebee. But here’s what I will do: I’ll recommend you for a job, working for the new Queen Bee.


JESUS
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

WANNABEE
Some day…some day I’ll go to church.

FRIZBEE
Some day, some day—it’s like a song to you, Wannabee! You sit around here in the bee hive and text your friends and play video games all day and night.

WANNABEE
I just wannabee like you, Frizbee.

FRIZBEE
What do you mean?

WANNABEE
I see how you turn yourself upside down and empty out your heart. Jesus fills you every day.


JESUS
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

BUMBLEBEE
Hey, Freebee, you owe me money from last week, remember?

FREEBEE
Uhmmm, yeah. Lemme try to remember…

HONEYBEE
Excuse me, Bumbleebee?

BUMBLEBEE
Yeah, whaddya want, Honeybee?

HONEYBEE
Remember when you borrowed honey from me recently, and you couldn’t pay it back?

BUMBLEBEE
Yes.

HONEYBEE
And I forgave you for it all?

BUMBLEBEE
Yes.

HONEYBEE
Do likewise to your brother.

BUMBLEBEE
I…well… I….okay…you’re right. Freebee: don’t worry about it.

FREEBEE
Really?

BUMBLEBEE
Yes—it’s all good.


JESUS
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

HUMBLEBEE
(kneeling, facing the audience; hands raised and looking toward heaven). Jesus, You are the Everlasting Father God. Lord, I seek Your face. I turn from my wicked ways and repent of my sins. Purge me, O God of all of my wrong attitudes and bitterness. I forgive everyone who’s ever done any wrong to me, and I give them to You, Lord. Forgive me if I’ve done any wrong to anyone—especially the people called by Your Name, Jesus.


JESUS
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

FREEBEE
Hey, Bumblee—gimme that iPhone—it’s mine! I won it free from the Cheerios contest last month.

BUMBLEBEE
No, Freebee! This one is mine! I got it for Christmas from the Queen Bee.

FREEBEE
Give it to me—give it to me, NOW!

BUMBLEBEE
NO—I’m telling you it’s mine!

HONEYBEE
Hey, hey—you two stop this right now!

FREEBEE
It’s—

BUMBLEBEE
Mine!

HONEYBEE
I said: STOP!

FREEBEE
But Honeybee—

HONEYBEE
But Honeybee, nothin’. I have your iPhone right here. I needed to call someone.

BUMBLEBEE
Oh, thank God.

FREEBEE
Yes, thank God and thank you, Honeybee.


JESUS
Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

FRIZBEE
Did you hear what happened to Humblebee?

WANNABEE
No… I was busy playing a game. What happened?

FRIZBEE
Humblebee was arrested. They took him away!

WANNABEE
You’re kidding!?!?

FRIZBEE
No…this is serious.

WANNABEE
Why did they take him away?

FRIZBEE
For praying in public.

WANNABEE
No way.

FRIZBEE
Way!

WANNABEE
Wow... that’s crazy.

FRIZBEE
Yes, let’s pray for Humblebee.

Creative work. While no-one could ever accuse you of a sectarian, you may face some complaints of beeing insect-arian.;-) Some good teaching tucked into the fun of your approach.

Okay this is the work of a genius! (Of course I didn't say what kind of a genius:) ) Seriously though, I positively loved it. I thought it creative, fun and a delight to read. You had me chuckling from the very beginning right up to the end. I love your wit. When Humbleebee corrected the grammar from got to have I laughed out loud for real and high-fived you through cyber-space. I will admit I didn't totally get Frizbee (other than the flat thing people throw and occasionally a dog might catch) I did see that the one was humble and one maybe a bit klutzy and bumbley but I didn't get the Friz part. But never fear because it's not a fantastic play on words if at least one or two of them don't go over my head. My final take on this piece is a simple one but a profound one--WOW!

This was beyond creative! I really liked how you made all the sub-plots so fun and playful while driving home a basic message. And then, with the last one, it all became serious. That transition was powerful and you could feel the change in tone. Excellent writing!
