As a member of the Young People’s group, I advocated for changes in our meetings. The repetitive activities like “Sword in hand”, ‘Bible verse memorization’ competitions among ourselves, and ‘Prayer time’, among a few others confined us within the church. We were bored. As a result, some of our members left for other churches.
Changes were promised but never actualized. After a heated discourse about this long-standing issue of in- activities Deacon Williams our President stated:
“Sister Marlene, I think it would be wise for you to be the President of the Young People’s group, for the coming year. I am unable to take on all the activities being proposed.”
Immediately, twenty- five young people stood in unison and applauded. I was the only one seated.
I got up and faced the members “Are you sure I can be of service?”
Sharon spoke, “You are mature, love the Lord, and have leadership skills.” Then she sat.
At the church’s annual members’ meeting I was elected to the Church Board as the newly appointed Young People President for the coming terms. The following Sunday, Pastor Scott presented to the congregation the newly elected members of the Church Board.
Tuesday evening, I scurried from work to the church hall for the first meeting. On arrival I received the agenda and welcome. Pastor Scott, the chairman began the meeting with a prayer then the Secretary read the minutes. There were corrections and acceptance of the Minutes.
Pastor Scott then highlighted the need for every member to pay close attention to the reports because the Board is the decision-making body of the church, and these reports should aid us in the growth and development of the body of Christ. (members)
Reports of the Men’s Fellowship, Women’s Ministry, and Young People’s movement were informative. Suggestions for improvements were given.
Miss Jones, the accountant presented the report for Income and Expenditure of the Tithes and Offerings and Donations. During her presentation, I felt weary and sometimes confused. On observation, Sister Mary and mister Adams nodded, while others raised their hands and slipped outside.
“Mister Chairman, let me publicly state that I do not want any member to bombard me with questions concerning money for their project. This is the place for this knowledge.”
At this point, the gavel was heard. “I know that this report is long, but this is a critical part of the meeting. Remember that as a church we ought to be accountable,” said the chairman.
Mister Sparks raised his hand.
“Yes sir,” said the chairman.
“Could we not get this information in our WhatsApp group chat, sir? I am really bored.”
Miss Jones held up her hand.
“You may take the floor, Miss Jones,” said the chairman.
“Mister Chairman, we do not want this information to be public knowledge.”
He nodded and surveyed the room, “All members, please come inside right now,” he hollered.
One by one each filed in.
Miss Jones eventually finished the report.
The Chairman stood. “I think we should appreciate this charitable work of Miss Jones. This is a comprehensive documentation of our finances. In upcoming meetings an engaged presentation will be shared so we will not be bored.”
“Oh yes” was heard and everyone giggled.
“Now let’s go to new business. Miss Marlene, give us a snippet of what to expect from you? Ten of our youths have left us. We want to keep the rest on board with us.”
A ripple of laughter came, and all eyed me, as I stood.
“With God’s help, I hope to inspire the youths to be vocal with their faith using street meetings; create Pantomime bringing the gospel into real-life situations. Invite community members to our “Come, play with us Tonight” where different board games, such as Snakes and ladders, Scrabble, and Chess would be played on the grounds of the church. Light refreshments will be served. Thanks.”
“You are creating history as the first female taking on this mammoth task, thanks for your willingness to be of service,” said the chairman.
