Recently my heart was made glad by the words of Psalm 19 which tells us that God created the heavens, the firmament, the seasons, night, day and the sun. They all declare His glory and speak of who He is. God's creation is good and shows His nature to us. Most profound and personal are flowers. They beautify the earth in summer and spring. As I walk along the pathway of nearby suburbs and villages I see the colours of wildflowers and in my neighbours' front gardens are flowerbeds planted by human hands.
“See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone.
Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come,
the cooing of doves is heard in our land.
The fig tree forms its early fruit; the blossoming vines spread their fragrance” said Solomon.[Song of Solomon 2:12-13a].
“God is in all creatures, even in the smallest flowers.” — Martin Luther
The brightly coloured petals bring joy and hope and dispel the depression birthed by grey skies and long cold days. Springtime speaks of new beginnings and tells me that God is present in the planned and unplanned. Along the way, I see white snowdrops, yellow primroses, daffodils, multi-coloured crocuses, bluebells, yellow buttercups and 'charming, five-petaled, blue or sometimes pink ‘forget me not’. They are all flourishing in the British spring.
‘The season of singing has indeed come! Birds are singing. I hear robins, thrushes, blackbirds and cuckoos call and sing as I slowly stroll the treelined ways. I see moles, rabbits, squirrels, badgers and ground owls busy scampering around in the hedgerows and open fields.
As I reflect on what my eyes see, I remember these words of C.S. Lewis; "There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind." This saying is an optimistic one. Like spring they foster hope. The hope that Spring brings to the earth helps me to reflect on the promises of God that all things will be made new.
Yes, God is in the business of renewal. He renews nature, and he renews his children through Christ.
‘Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come! {2 Corinthians 5:17}.
So if you are in an old dark place, reach out to Jesus. He is the solution. He will make you new inside and out. His Holy Spirit living inside will make you colourful with hope and fragrant with joy and love.
