the gift he gave his people with an open hand,
an open heart, the hills and valleys that he chose
for them. With milk and honey evermore it flows.
His eyes are always on it, and like sparkling eyes
the springs are in the landscape, gushing where they rise
as if to everlasting life. Strong Samson’s thirst
was slaked when he called out to God and water burst
the rock to give En-hakkore its name. The sun
is on En-shemesh all day long. Though Barak won
a mighty victory at Endor, Dwelling Spring,
its witch gave little comfort to a frightened king.
From green and lush En-gedi, Fountain of the Kid,
where hunted David and his band of outlaws hid,
along the lifeless seashore to En-eglaim,
the Spring of Two Calves, nets will catch the fish that swim,
the prophet says, in water freshened by the Lord
when after exile Israel’s remnant is restored.
The double springs of Enam, swollen by the rain,
the gardens of En-gannim in their fertile plain,
En-rimmon’s pomegranates, and the apple trees
the fountain of En-tappuah looks out and sees -
all gush from God. For lack of faith God’s judgement fell
on Moses at En-mishpat, but the Fuller’s Well,
En-rogel, was the base for David’s faithful spies,
Ahimaaz and Jonathan. So also rise
En-haddah, Spring of Sharpness, and the Village Spring,
En-hazor, gushing from the dusty ground to bring
God’s goodness to his people; for his love is deep,
his mercy everlasting to all those who keep
his great commandments and can truly understand
the living water flowing through this thirsty land.
