His last command was that we go into all the world and make disciples. Should not that be our first priority? I have held back because of what others have said and of what they might think of me. Have you? There is hope; we have to get our minds off of ourselves and spring forward into real life. We must drop the things that weigh us down in order to get there. Small, temporal things hold us back. Often it is a mindset that is worldly. We want the abundant life, or do we? Is that mindset so important that it stands between us and Jesus? I hate to break the news, but that makes that thing in our minds an idol. How does God feel about idols?
“I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars, and cast your carcasses on the lifeless forms of your idols; and My soul shall abhor you.” Leviticus 26:30 (NKJV)
That is only one reference to idols and how God hates them. He wants them totally destroyed. But…but what? Come on, we cannot keep them. A really big idol, and perhaps the most difficult to destroy, is an improper soul tie. If we have one of those, we know it. It stands tall between us and Jesus. We have to destroy it, though it will be painful. Is it more important than Jesus to us? How do we break this idol? There is only one way: we have to train our eyes and our hearts to turn away everything but Jesus. If it is not of Him, it has to go. It will most likely require that we violently thrust ourselves forward as we spring away from our past lives of complacency and disobedience.
If we ever wonder what it is that we are supposed to be doing, here it is, plain and simple: His last command must be our first priority. When we obey this, our idols fade into oblivion.
“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen.” Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJV)
He will help us! How glorious is that? We can’t do it alone, but He is right there to catch us as we spring forward into His arms of love.
